MoneyGram and the Post Office gave competing accounts of why MoneyGram transfers stopped at Post Office branches on 1 October 2024. MoneyGram said it believed a binding 12-month contract extension was in place; the Post Office said negotiations were nearing completion before a cyber incident and that MoneyGram rejected a short extension. The available reporting does not establish which interpretation of the contract is legally correct.

What happened to MoneyGram at the Post Office?

MoneyGram services stopped at Post Office branches on 1 October 2024. Computer Weekly reported that subpostmasters were given a day’s notice before the service ended. The Post Office’s current help page confirms that MoneyGram has not been available in its branches since that date and directs customers with queries to MoneyGram.

The disagreement arose while the companies were negotiating a replacement contract. Their accounts differ on whether a new term had already been agreed and what extension was offered after a cyber incident disrupted MoneyGram’s service.

Why did MoneyGram say the Post Office was wrong?

In a letter to subpostmasters, MoneyGram said it believed there was a binding agreement for a new 12-month extension. It accused the Post Office of using the unforeseen cyber incident to change the duration and terms to MoneyGram’s detriment.

MoneyGram described the Post Office’s message to subpostmasters as “misleading” and a breach of the current agreement’s confidentiality. That is MoneyGram’s allegation, not an established finding.

What was the Post Office’s explanation?

The Post Office said the parties had been negotiating since June 2024 and expected a new contract to begin on 1 October. In a message to subpostmasters quoted by Computer Weekly, it said: “The contracting process was in the final stages when, unfortunately, MoneyGram suffered the cyber attack.”

The Post Office’s reported position was that MoneyGram rejected an offer of a short extension. It also said the service remained unavailable while it sought to understand the protective measures MoneyGram had put in place after the incident.

How did the cyber incident affect the dispute?

Computer Weekly reported that MoneyGram’s service issue began on 20 September 2024. It was initially understood as a network-connectivity outage; the report later described it as a major cyber attack. The incident occurred during contract negotiations and featured in both companies’ explanations for the interruption, but the reporting does not provide an independent technical account of what happened.

At the time, MoneyGram told subpostmasters that its cyber-security experts had determined the incident did not affect agents’ systems, and that operations had resumed in every country outside the UK while the company worked to restore UK operations. Those were MoneyGram’s statements as reported on 2 October 2024—not an independent assessment or confirmation of its current UK service status.

Does the reporting settle whether an extension was binding?

No. Computer Weekly reported the parties’ opposing descriptions, but the sources available do not include the signed contract or negotiation correspondence. They therefore do not establish whether a binding 12-month extension existed, whether the short extension offer was made on the terms described, or which party’s interpretation would prevail legally.

MoneyGram’s claim and the Post Office’s account should be treated as competing positions rather than a proven legal conclusion. The reporting also does not establish a later contract outcome.

What can Post Office customers use instead?

The Post Office currently lists Western Union international money transfer as a service. That confirms its listing, but does not show that Western Union is equivalent to the former MoneyGram service. Availability, recipient-country coverage, payout methods, total cost, transfer speed, identity requirements and customer support can differ by route and product. Check the provider’s current terms for the specific transfer before choosing an option.

Is the financial impact on postmasters known?

Not from the figures disclosed in the available official response. A postmaster asked the Post Office for total commission earned on MoneyGram products during the previous 12 months and over the life of the contract. In its response dated 31 October 2024, the Post Office said it held the information but withheld it under section 43(2) of the Freedom of Information Act, citing potential prejudice to commercial interests and future negotiations. No commission total or quantified revenue impact is established by that response.
