For a parcel from the United States to Australia, there is no universal USPS-or-courier winner: the better fit depends on your packed parcel, service level, destination, delivery needs and customs costs. USPS publishes retail starting prices and delivery estimates; private couriers such as DHL quote based on the shipment. Compare live quotes for the exact package, then check tracking, coverage, eligibility and any charges the recipient may owe.
How much does it cost to ship from the USA to Australia?
USPS’s international service comparison, accessed in 2026, lists these retail starting prices. They are advertised starting points, not quotes for a particular parcel, and USPS prices and eligibility can change. Check USPS’s current international service comparison and use its postage calculator before buying postage.

All prices, limits and service terms in the table are USPS figures accessed in 2026; confirm the current Australia destination entry and your parcel’s eligibility at booking. The USPS describes First-Class Package International Service as “an economical way to send lightweight packages to about 180 countries.” That is USPS’s characterization, not a promise that it will be the cheapest option for your parcel. DHL does not publish one price that applies to every U.S.-to-Australia shipment on its destination page. Its quote depends on weight, dimensions, destination and additional services; service options range from next-business-day shipping for account customers to more economical options. Get a DHL shipping quote to Australia using the actual packed parcel, and compare the total against the USPS service that meets your needs. DHL also offers a landed-cost estimation tool for business shipments.

Make the comparison on the packed parcel
Weigh and measure the parcel after packing, then compare the same contents and delivery address across carriers. A box that fits a USPS weight limit may still be ineligible because of its dimensions or contents. Include any disclosed handling or recipient charges in the comparison. A small digital parcel scale can help you record the packed weight before requesting quotes; it does not guarantee a lower postage rate.
How long does USPS take to deliver to Australia?
USPS publishes an estimate of 3–5 business days for Priority Mail Express International and 6–10 business days for Priority Mail International. These are service estimates, not guarantees for every parcel. First-Class Package International Service has destination-variable delivery timing, and USPS does not give one Australia-specific duration in the cited comparison. Transit time for DHL depends on the service selected; its Australia page does not state a single time that applies to all parcels.

Is USPS or DHL better for shipping to Australia?
Choose based on the shipment rather than the carrier name. USPS offers published starting prices and estimates for several international services. DHL’s quote is specific to the parcel and selected options, and it provides online tracking and a landed-cost estimator for business shipments. The information available does not establish that either carrier is universally cheaper, faster or better.

Will the recipient pay customs fees in Australia?
Possibly. Australia Post says the destination country determines whether import duties, taxes or customs-clearance fees are payable by the recipient. DHL says Australian import charges depend on the item, declared value and whether a shipment is commercial or personal. There is no universal charge established for an unspecified parcel, so check current Australian Border Force guidance and the shipment-specific carrier quote.

Check both the carrier’s acceptance rules and Australia’s import restrictions for the actual contents. A carrier’s refusal does not by itself establish whether an item is permitted under Australian import rules, and one carrier’s acceptance does not guarantee that customs will admit it. Australia Post recommends checking destination-specific restrictions and its prohibited and restricted items guide. Australia Post’s international customs guidance
One specific USPS restriction: its Australia destination listing says Priority Mail Express International shipments to Australia cannot contain certain valuable articles, including coins, banknotes, securities, precious metals, precious stones, jewelry and watches. This restriction is for that USPS service as stated in the listing; check the current rules for the chosen service and contents before posting. USPS Australia destination listing
