A mortgage-insurance scam warning attributed to a sheriff’s office cannot be confirmed from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office newsletter reviewed here: it contains general scam advice and a separate item about home-title fraud, but no matching mortgage-insurance warning. If you receive an unsolicited notice or offer, don’t pay or share information until you verify it directly with your mortgage servicer or insurer through contact details you already trust.
What the sheriff’s newsletter does—and does not—confirm
The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office newsletter describes general scam warning signs, including pressure, secrecy, spoofed calls, and demands for payment by cryptocurrency, gift cards, payment apps, or money transfers. It recommends ending a suspicious interaction and independently contacting the relevant bank or government agency using a trusted number, not contact information provided by the caller.

How to check an unsolicited mortgage-insurance notice
- Pause. Don’t follow a link, call a number, or use payment instructions in an unexpected email, text, letter, or call.
- Contact your mortgage servicer or insurer independently. Use the number on an existing statement or insurance card, or visit an official website address you already know is genuine. Ask whether the notice, policy, or charge is connected to your account.
- Confirm before changing coverage or paying. Do not cancel an existing policy, buy a replacement, or provide financial or personal information until the company confirms the request through a trusted channel.
- Treat unusual payment demands as a warning sign. The sheriff’s newsletter identifies requests for cryptocurrency, gift cards, payment apps, or transfers as general scam red flags; it does not establish that these methods are specific to a mortgage-insurance scam.
Do not confuse mortgage-insurance notices with home-title fraud
The sheriff’s newsletter separately describes a home-title fraud scenario in which an impostor claims to own a property and approaches a realtor. It advises checking property records and notes Larimer County’s Recording Activity Notification program. That is a distinct real-estate issue—not evidence of a mortgage-insurance scam. Property-record systems and notification programs vary by county; contact the relevant local records office for information about your property.
