Sheffield Wednesday’s sale is no longer an open story. The club was sold to Arise Capital Partners LLC in May 2026, and the Football League said it was no longer regarded as in administration afterwards. The separate proposal for Derby County, a takeover by Turki Alalshikh’s Lion Sport, was reported as abandoned in August 2026. Mike Ashley’s role in either process is not established by the official statements or reporting available for this article, so this piece does not claim that he bid, withdrew or was outbid.
Where each story stands as of 8 October 2026
| Club | Transaction | Outcome | Current position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheffield Wednesday | Sale by administrators to Arise Capital Partners LLC | Completed, May 2026 | Club no longer regarded as in administration by the EFL; club to start the upcoming season on zero points (BTG) |
| Derby County | Proposed takeover by Lion Sport (Turki Alalshikh) | Reported abandoned, August 2026 (BBC Sport) | Official ownership page still lists Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd as owner |
These are two different transactions with different buyers, sellers and outcomes. The Wednesday deal finished. The Derby deal did not. Nothing in the available reporting links them beyond the fact that both made headlines in the same period.
How Sheffield Wednesday reached a sale
October 2025: administration and a 12-point deduction
On 24 October 2025, the English Football League (EFL) announced that Sheffield Wednesday had taken steps to appoint administrators to both the football club and the company that owns Hillsborough. Under the regulations in force at the time, that step triggered an automatic 12-point deduction.
May 2026: agreement with Arise Capital Partners
On 2 May 2026, the EFL said the administrators had concluded an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch, with Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The EFL said the club met league requirements, would no longer be regarded as in administration, and would not receive a proposed 15-point deduction on exit from administration.

Three days later, on 5 May 2026, BTG, the joint administrator, confirmed the sale had completed. BTG said the club would begin the upcoming season on zero points and described an agreed position on wage and transfer parameters. Speaking for Arise in that announcement, David Storch said: “Sheffield Wednesday deserves stability, ambition and a clear direction. That is what we are here to deliver.”
Why there are two different point figures
Readers have seen both 12 and 15 points attached to Wednesday. They come from separate decisions at different stages, not from conflicting rulings.

- 12 points (October 2025): an automatic deduction announced by the EFL when administration was initiated.
- 15 points (proposed in 2026): a deduction the EFL said it would not impose once the club exited administration following the Arise sale.
- Zero points (start of 2026-27): the starting position BTG stated for the upcoming season, which is the outcome the club is now working from.
The Companies House filing that can look contradictory
An extension of the administration period for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited appears on Companies House with a date of 30 August 2026. That filing concerns the company, which is a separate legal entity from the football club. The EFL’s statement that the football club, following its asset sale, was no longer regarded as in administration concerns the club’s league status. The two can both be true at once, so the filing should not be read as reversing the EFL’s position.
Derby County: the abandoned Lion Sport proposal
On 10 August 2026, BBC Sport reported that Turki Alalshikh had abandoned his proposed takeover of Derby County through Lion Sport. According to that report, the proposal had appeared close to completion and had received approval from the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator. That account is BBC Sport’s reporting; the approval details are attributed to it rather than confirmed in an official Derby statement.

Derby’s official ownership page still identifies Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd as the owner, which is consistent with the deal not completing. Any change of control at Derby would have to satisfy both EFL and Independent Football Regulator requirements, the same two regimes that apply to any acquisition of control in the league.

Mike Ashley’s name is attached to the broader story, but the official statements from the EFL, BTG and Derby County, the BBC Sport report, and the Companies House filings do not establish what he did in the Sheffield Wednesday bidding process. Until a direct, attributable source says otherwise, the accurate position is that his involvement is unresolved. The same applies to any suggestion that his interest connected the Wednesday and Derby transactions.
