Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover is complete: Arise Capital Partners acquired the club in May 2026. The reported £30 million figure was an approximate amount administrators said bidders would need to pay all creditors 25p in the pound—not a confirmed sale price. Supporters’ Trust meeting minutes separately attributed £54 million of debt through Sheffield 3 and around £62.5 million through Sheffield Wednesday FC to former owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Who took over Sheffield Wednesday?

Arise Capital Partners LLC became Sheffield Wednesday’s new owner in May 2026, ending Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership. The English Football League confirmed the new ownership on 2 May, identifying David Storch as the consortium’s lead alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The joint administrators, BTG, confirmed that the sale was completed on 5 May. The EFL’s announcement and BTG’s completion notice establish the outcome; neither notice gives the final consideration paid.

What did the reported £30m figure mean?

In meeting minutes published by Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust in 2025, administrator Kris Wigfield was reported as saying that prospective buyers had been told a purchase figure in the region of £30 million would be needed to pay all creditors 25p in the pound. The minutes describe the estimate as encompassing Hillsborough, settlement of New Avenue Projects and stadium-secured loans, and administration costs. The Trust minutes therefore describe a buyer-process estimate and its intended use—not a verified final sale price.

The distinction matters: a figure discussed with bidders before a sale does not establish the amount ultimately agreed. BTG’s May 2026 completion announcement confirms that the sale closed but does not state what Arise Capital Partners paid. The final consideration is not established by these announcements.

How much did Sheffield Wednesday owe Chansiri?

The Supporters’ Trust minutes attribute two separate figures to debt owed to Chansiri through different entities:

Reported amount Entity or context Source and date
£54 million Debt attributed to Sheffield 3 Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust meeting minutes, 2025
Around £62.5 million Debt attributed to Sheffield Wednesday FC Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust meeting minutes, 2025
£60 million BBC’s description of Chansiri’s loans to the club over more than a decade BBC Sport, 11 March 2026

These are attributed descriptions, not a single reconciled debt total. The minutes distinguish Sheffield 3 from the football club, and the available reporting does not resolve how the claims and any recoveries should be combined. BBC Sport’s March 2026 account uses a separate £60 million loan description; it should be read as that report’s characterization, not as confirmation that the entity-specific figures in the minutes are identical or directly comparable. BBC Sport’s report also said £15 million repayment was the relevant threshold at that bidder-process stage to avoid a points loss.

Why did creditor repayment affect the takeover?

The Trust minutes say the administrators told prospective buyers that a new owner would need to pay 25p in the pound on the club debt to avoid further EFL sanctions. They also report that Chansiri had no protections or rights over Sheffield 3’s debt under EFL regulations. This is why the £30 million estimate cannot be treated simply as a price for the club or as a measure of Chansiri’s debt: it was presented in the context of creditor repayment and stadium-related costs.

BBC Sport reported in March 2026 that Arise Capital Partners had entered an exclusive period as preferred bidder, but that the offer at that stage would not meet the EFL’s 25p-per-pound creditor repayment requirement. The report described a possible 15-point consequence for the following season. That was a bidder-stage risk, not the final outcome after the sale.

What happened to the points deductions?

Sheffield Wednesday entered administration on 24 October 2025. BBC Sport later reported an immediate 12-point deduction and a further six-point penalty connected with payment-related breaches involving players, staff, HMRC and transfer fees. BBC Sport’s 2 May 2026 account covers the administration context.

After the completed sale and the club’s exit from administration, BTG said the EFL would not impose the further 15-point deduction and that Wednesday would start the upcoming season on zero points. This was the administrators’ post-completion confirmation, superseding the potential sanction reported during the March bidder process.

Quick Recap

What the figures do—and do not—show

  • The takeover completed in May 2026, with Arise Capital Partners as the new owner.
  • The circa-£30 million figure was an administrators’ estimate discussed with bidders in connection with paying creditors 25p in the pound and addressing stadium-related costs.
  • The Trust minutes reported £54 million through Sheffield 3 and around £62.5 million through Sheffield Wednesday FC as amounts owed to Chansiri; they do not establish a definitive combined debt total.
  • BBC Sport separately reported £60 million in loans and a £15 million repayment threshold in March 2026. Those figures describe that report’s account of the bidder-stage dispute.
  • The completed-sale notices confirm the transaction and points outcome, but do not disclose the final sale consideration.
