Sheffield Wednesday takeover: James Bord bid withdrawn as Arise completes deal

Bord’s proposed takeover collapsed in February 2026. Arise Capital Partners later completed the transaction, and the EFL confirmed Wednesday’s exit from administration and waived a further 15-point deduction.

James Bord’s proposed takeover of Sheffield Wednesday did not go ahead: his consortium withdrew on 25 February 2026. Arise Capital Partners LLC, led by David Storch, later completed the club’s purchase, and the EFL confirmed on 2 May that Wednesday had exited administration. The lawsuit and Independent Football Regulator update in the headline relate to the earlier Bord bid, not the completed Arise transaction.

What happened to the James Bord takeover?

The Bord-led consortium was named preferred bidder in December 2025 for a proposed deal widely reported at £47.8 million. That figure was for the proposal, not the eventual sale price. On 25 February 2026, the consortium withdrew. In a statement reported by BBC Sport, it said the scale of the bid could no longer be justified and that it had spent more than £4 million helping to run the club over the previous two months. That spending figure was the consortium’s own statement as reported by BBC Sport.

The withdrawal ended Bord’s bid; it did not end the sale process. On 10 March, Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators announced Arise Capital Partners LLC as the new preferred bidder.

What was reported about the lawsuit and the regulator?

The lawsuit

An archived Times report said Bord was being sued by a former friend and business partner over an investment in Córdoba. That is a report of a legal claim, not proof of wrongdoing: the available reporting does not establish that a court found Bord liable or provide an outcome in the case. It also does not give enough detail to explain the underlying investment dispute beyond that description.

The Independent Football Regulator

The same Times report said the Independent Football Regulator had sought further clarity from Bord’s consortium during its proposed bid process. The available account does not establish that the regulator made a finding of wrongdoing. Its reported request concerned the Bord proposal; it was not the final approval of the Arise transaction.

How the sale process unfolded

  1. 24 October 2025: Sheffield Wednesday entered administration and received an immediate 12-point deduction, according to BBC Sport.
  2. 24 December 2025: Administrators named the Bord-led consortium preferred bidder. The proposed deal was reported at £47.8 million.
  3. 25 February 2026: Bord’s consortium withdrew its proposed takeover.
  4. 10 March 2026: The administrators announced Arise Capital Partners LLC as preferred bidder.
  5. 11 March 2026: BBC Sport reported an interim creditor-repayment issue and the possibility of a further 15-point penalty if EFL requirements were not met. That was an interim concern, not the final decision.
  6. 2 May 2026: The EFL confirmed that the administrators had concluded an asset-transfer agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The club met league requirements and exited administration.

Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?

The completed transaction was with Arise Capital Partners LLC. In its 2 May statement, the EFL identified David Storch as the consortium’s lead and named Michael Storch and Tom Costin alongside him. Bord was not the eventual buyer. The EFL described the transaction as an asset transfer and confirmed the club was no longer in administration.

What happened to the points deductions?

Wednesday had already received an immediate 12-point deduction on entering administration. BBC Sport also reported a further six-point deduction over charges connected with missed payments to players, staff and HMRC, and transfer fees owed to other clubs. With 13 games remaining, the club was relegated to League One.

During the Arise process, a possible additional 15-point penalty was reported if the deal did not satisfy EFL requirements. On 2 May, the EFL said it would not impose that further deduction when the club exited administration. It cited its discretion under the Insolvency Policy and its consideration of proposals made to former owner Dejphon Chansiri by the administrators and the new ownership. BBC Sport reported that separate budget restrictions would apply for two seasons; those restrictions are distinct from a points deduction.

Why the interim warning is not the final outcome

The 11 March reporting described a potential consequence while the Arise deal was still being assessed. The EFL’s 2 May statement records the final position: the transaction was completed, Wednesday left administration, and the extra 15-point deduction was not applied. The reported creditor-repayment figure of 25 pence in the pound was part of the interim EFL issue; it should not be treated as an unresolved condition after the completion announcement.
