That report did not establish who ultimately won the sale, and the reaction “I really hope he doesn’t win a bidding war” should not be treated as a view shared by the entire fanbase.
What happened with Mike Ashley’s offer?
Sky Sports reported on 26 November 2025 that Ashley had made an initial offer of around £20 million and that it had not been accepted. The report said he might return with an improved offer; it did not say that he had done so. Sky Sports’ report is a snapshot of the process at that date, not confirmation of its eventual result.
Why the highest bid might not decide the sale
The administrators were reportedly considering three offers they viewed as credible, while two additional parties were waiting in the wings. Sky Sports said prospective buyers had been asked to demonstrate at least £50 million in available funds to qualify as credible purchasers able to buy and support the club. This was a reported threshold for the process, not the price of the club or a confirmed offer from any bidder.
The reported assessment also went beyond the amount offered. Administrators were weighing whether a buyer could provide:

- viable funding to support it in the future; and
- the ability to pass the EFL Owners and Directors test.
Those criteria help explain why an offer could be unsuccessful even if it were substantial. The available report does not provide comparable financial details for the other bidders, so it cannot show which proposal was strongest overall.
What the bidding-war reaction does—and does not—tell us
“I really hope he doesn’t win a bidding war” is the reaction wording attached to this story, but its original speaker and publication context have not been verified. It should therefore be presented as an individual reaction, not as evidence of a general Sheffield Wednesday fan consensus. Nor does the wording establish that Ashley entered or won a later bidding war: the contemporaneous report only said his first offer was not accepted and that he might improve it.

Was a preferred bidder chosen?
Sky Sports reported that administrators expected to give a preferred bidder exclusivity by the end of the following week. That was a forecast made on 26 November 2025, not confirmation that a bidder was selected on schedule. The available reporting does not establish the takeover’s outcome as of 8 October 2026; it cannot support a claim that Ashley won or lost the overall process.
