Sheffield Wednesday Takeover: Arise Deal, John Textor Update and EFL Restrictions

Arise Capital Partners completed Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover on 2 May 2026. The EFL waived a potential 15-point exit penalty but confirmed a two-season budget restriction; a separate current embargo and post-takeover protest fallout are not established by the available statements.

Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover was completed by Arise Capital Partners LLC on 2 May 2026—not by John Textor. The EFL confirmed the club had left administration, waived a potential 15-point deduction on exit, and placed Wednesday under a budget restriction for the next two seasons, with player registrations governed by an agreed business plan. The exact current status of any separate embargo is not established by the EFL’s takeover statement.

Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?

Arise Capital Partners LLC completed the takeover on 2 May 2026. The EFL said administrators BTG had concluded an agreement to transfer the club’s assets to the consortium, led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The league also confirmed that Wednesday had met its relevant requirements and was no longer in administration. (EFL, 2 May 2026.)

In March 2026, Wednesday had announced Arise as its preferred bidder after the previous preferred bidder withdrew; the club said Arise had provided a deposit and evidence of funds. That was a stage in the sale process, not the completion announcement. The EFL’s May statement confirms the completed transaction.

What happened to the points deductions?

The EFL Board decided not to impose a potential 15-point deduction when Wednesday exited administration. That decision concerned a prospective penalty on exit; it did not reverse deductions already imposed during the 2025/26 season.

Points What the figure refers to Source and date
12 Automatic deduction triggered when the club and the company that owns Hillsborough entered administration. EFL, 24 October 2025
18 Total deductions the EFL said had resulted from administration and separate disciplinary proceedings during that season. EFL, 19 December 2025
15 Potential deduction on exit from administration that the EFL Board chose not to impose. EFL, 2 May 2026

The 12-point figure was part of the later 18-point total, not an additional deduction on top of it. The waived 15 points were a separate prospective penalty, not points returned to Wednesday.

Is Sheffield Wednesday still under an EFL embargo?

The EFL’s 2 May 2026 statement confirms a budget restriction for the next two seasons and says Wednesday may register players under a business plan agreed jointly by the new ownership and the EFL. It does not enumerate a separate current embargo or specify the detailed terms of every registration or transfer-fee restriction.

Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust meeting notes from 27 October 2025 reported that administration brought an embargo while other restrictions were already in place. Those notes describe the administration-era position; they do not establish which separate restrictions, if any, continued after the takeover. It is therefore accurate to report the confirmed budget restriction, but not to state that a separate embargo remains in force on 8 October 2026 without a newer attributable confirmation.

What is the John Textor update?

John Textor was reported as a person linked to a possible Wednesday takeover in a FourFourTwo report dated 8 October 2025. That report predates the club’s administration and the completed sale to Arise. It is historical bidder speculation, not evidence that Textor bought the club or remains an active buyer.

What is known about protest fallout?

The available dated material does not establish specific protest consequences after the takeover. The October 2025 EFL and Supporters’ Trust meeting notes discuss planned protest action and safety arrangements during the administration-era situation, but they do not document current protest activity or its fallout in October 2026. There is no substantiated current figure for participation or evidence here of new sanctions or other consequences.

How does the ownership regulatory framework apply?

The EFL’s acquisition-of-control guidance says a takeover is subject to EFL and Independent Football Regulator requirements. It describes the Owners, Directors and Senior Executives (ODSE) regime as introduced from 5 May 2026, with the IFR assessing honesty and integrity, financial soundness, financial resources, and competence. This is general regulatory context; it is not a new ruling about Wednesday’s owners.
