Sheffield Wednesday was acquired by Arise Capital Partners in May 2026, not Mike Ashley. Ashley was reported as interested during the takeover process, but the available reports do not establish that he completed a bid or bought the club. The sale followed the withdrawal of James Bord’s consortium.
Who bought Sheffield Wednesday?
Arise Capital Partners LLC completed the acquisition, and the club exited administration, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed on 2 May 2026. Arise is led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The club had announced the group as its preferred bidder on 10 March, after an earlier sale process fell through.
The EFL also said Sheffield Wednesday would remain subject to a budget restriction for the next two seasons as a condition of continuing its League membership. Its statement did not specify the restriction’s detailed financial limits.
What happened to James Bord’s takeover?
Bord had been named the preferred bidder, but his consortium withdrew from the process on 25 February 2026, according to BBC Sport. The administrators subsequently selected Arise as the new preferred bidder.

Was Mike Ashley involved in the purchase?
News reports described Ashley as interested during the sale process, but that is not the same as evidence of a completed bid or acquisition. BBC Sport reported in January that he was another bidder. After Bord’s consortium withdrew, The Irish News, citing Press Association understanding, reported that Ashley was exploring a deal. The eventual official outcome was Arise’s acquisition.
What the EFL said about the completed sale
EFL chief executive Trevor Birch said: “Together, we have managed to move this to a successful conclusion and I would like to wish everybody at the Club, in particular the new ownership and their associates, all the very best for a long and prosperous future that will benefit not only those at the Football Club, but also the supporters and the local community it represents.”

The EFL’s 2 May 2026 announcement is the latest relevant official ownership confirmation identified here. The conclusion it supports is specific: Arise completed the sale and Wednesday left administration; it does not establish any later ownership developments.
