Sheffield United’s takeover by COH Sports was announced in December 2024. The later development is a dispute over a reported £35 million in sale consideration: August 2026 reports described a winding-up petition and a High Court order involving COH Sports Bidco Limited. Those reports do not establish a final EFL sanction, and the available information does not confirm the dispute’s current procedural status.

What changed in the Sheffield United takeover situation?

The takeover itself was completed earlier: Sheffield United announced in December 2024 that COH Sports had acquired the club, naming Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy as co-chairmen. The significant later issue is the former ownership group’s claim that £35 million of the sale consideration remains unpaid.

In reporting dated 17 August 2026, Sky Sports said United World had issued a winding-up petition over the claimed amount. The Independent reported on 19 August 2026 that a High Court winding-up order had been made against COH Sports Bidco Limited. These are developments involving a company connected with the acquisition; they should not be described as a finding that Sheffield United itself owes the money.

What is the £35 million dispute about?

The figure is a reported claim by former owner Prince Abdullah’s group, United World, that part of the sale consideration remains unpaid. It is disputed, not an established debt on the evidence available here. Sky Sports’ 17 August report concerned the petition; the Independent’s 19 August report described the subsequent court order against COH Sports Bidco Limited.

#1 Best Overall
Sheffield United FC | Soccer Fan Scarf | Premium Acrylic Knit
  • Soft warm acrylic knit in classic Sheffield United team colors of red, white + black | Substantial weight that drapes + holds its shape
  • Sheffield United team name + mock club crest jacquard knitted into both sides, so the scarf reads right whichever way it hangs
  • This scarf measures over 5 feet long with soft fringes at either end | Wraps once around the neck with room to spare, or hang it on the wall as a classic Blades collectible
  • Hand wash is recommended and ready for cold weather | One size fits adult Men + Women, and it packs down small for the Stadium or a watch party
  • Authentic fan scarf, as worn by Blades supporters at Bramall Lane and everywhere | A great gift idea for the Sheffield United fan or the Blades believer in your life!

The dispute also involved the ownership group’s company structure. The Guardian reported on 8 July 2026 that the EFL was investigating allegations connected to the formation or role of 1919 Partners LLC and a new parent-company arrangement. The allegation that the structure was intended to avoid payment remains an allegation, not a proven finding.

Could Sheffield United face a points deduction?

The cited reports discuss possible EFL consequences, but they do not confirm that the league imposed a points deduction or any other sporting sanction. The Guardian reported an EFL investigation in July 2026, while the Independent discussed potential consequences after the court development in August. An investigation or a report about possible consequences is not a final regulatory decision.

Corporate filings alone do not settle either question. Companies House records a charge registered on 30 April 2026 and an office-address change on 26 May 2026, but those entries do not resolve the payment claim or establish the complete current ownership structure.

What remains uncertain

  • The current procedural status of the winding-up matter after the reports dated 17 and 19 August 2026.
  • Whether the £35 million claim has been resolved, paid, or determined by a court.
  • Whether the EFL has concluded its investigation or announced a sanction.

For a personal-finance reader, the key distinction is between the amount claimed and an amount legally established as payable. The reporting cited here documents a serious company and regulatory dispute, but it does not provide a final resolution or confirm a points deduction.
