Sheffield United’s takeover by COH Sports was completed in December 2024. The current story is a dispute over the unpaid balance of that sale, a later change to the club’s ownership structure involving 1919 Partners LLC, and a High Court winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited, the company used to buy the club. The club said its day-to-day operations were unaffected. The EFL said it would consider the order and related regulatory matters; no final outcome had been verified as of 8 October 2026.
What is happening with the Sheffield United takeover?
There is no newly announced sale to a different buyer in the reported developments. Instead, the focus is on the 2024 COH Sports purchase: United World, the investment vehicle of former owner Prince Abdullah, says part of the sale consideration remains unpaid. The club later announced a new ownership structure centred on 1919 Partners LLC, and the company that acquired the club was subsequently subject to a winding-up order.
Those are related events in the ownership dispute, but they are not the same thing. The unpaid amount is a claim about the sale; the winding-up order is a court decision against a specific company. Neither, by itself, establishes that the football club has been wound up or determines the EFL’s regulatory response.
How did the dispute develop?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 23 December 2024 | Sheffield United announced that COH Sports had acquired 100% of Blades Leisure Limited, the club’s parent. The club said the deal also covered Sheffield United Women, SUFC Hotel Ltd and real estate. The club’s filed accounts identify COH Sports Bidco Limited as the company that acquired all of Blades Leisure Limited’s share capital on that date. Club announcement; Companies House |
| June 2026 | The club announced 1919 Partners LLC, a Delaware company, as its parent company and a central part of its ownership structure. United World alleged that the transfer was connected to the unpaid sale balance. The current owners’ reported explanation was that restructuring would make the ownership structure more flexible and support future investment. The explanations of motive remain competing positions, not an established finding. The Guardian |
| July 2026 | United World took its claim to court and raised concerns with the EFL and Independent Football Regulator. The Guardian reported that the EFL had requested observations from relevant parties and was reviewing ownership developments. The Guardian |
| 19 August 2026 | The High Court made a winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco Limited. Sheffield United said it was in contact with the EFL and that day-to-day operations were unaffected. The EFL said it would consider the order’s implications and continued to consider other ownership-related matters. The Independent |
What is the £35 million Sheffield United debt?
The Guardian reported that United World says about £35 million remains unpaid from the sale, which it reported was worth about £100 million. The same report said the current owners accepted that approximately £35 million was owed, while maintaining that the debt and the restructuring were not related. These are reported figures and positions; the amount should not be confused with a final resolution of the claim or with the court’s winding-up order. The Guardian’s report

Who owns Sheffield United now, and what is 1919 Partners?
The ownership has several corporate layers, so references to “the owner” can mean different entities. Sheffield United’s filed accounts state that COH Sports Bidco Limited acquired Blades Leisure Limited in December 2024. The accounts name COH Sports United LLC as the ultimate parent at the time covered by those accounts, jointly controlled by trusts of Stephen Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy. In June 2026, the club announced 1919 Partners LLC, a Delaware company, as its parent company and a central part of the ownership structure.
Companies House lists Blades Leisure Limited as the active person with significant control over Sheffield United Football Club Limited. These corporate records clarify which entities sit in the chain, but they do not settle the EFL’s assessment of the later restructuring. Has COH Sports been wound up?
The High Court order reported on 19 August 2026 was against COH Sports Bidco Limited, the acquisition vehicle used to buy the club. It was not an order against Sheffield United Football Club Limited itself. Sheffield United said at the time that its day-to-day operations were unaffected and that it was in contact with the EFL.
