Sheffield United’s 2024 takeover by COH Sports is complete. The current story is a dispute over United World’s claim that about £35 million remains unpaid, the club’s restructuring under parent company 1919 Partners LLC, and a High Court winding-up order against the company used to buy the club. As of 7 October 2026, the EFL and Independent Football Regulator were still investigating; no 12-point deduction had been reported as imposed.

Who owns Sheffield United now?

COH Sports completed its acquisition of Sheffield United from Prince Abdullah’s United World group on 23 December 2024. Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy joined the board as co-chairmen. The acquisition included the men’s and women’s teams, SUFC Hotel Ltd and club real estate, according to BBC Sport’s report of the completed takeover.

A Sheffield United board update in June 2026 identified Delaware-based 1919 Partners LLC as the club’s parent company and part of its ownership structure. The Guardian reported that United World said shares had been transferred to 1919 Partners from COH Sports Bidco Limited (CSBL), the company used for the acquisition. The ownership side said the restructuring was intended to create a more flexible platform for investment and long-term financial sustainability, not to avoid paying the former owners (The Guardian, 8 July 2026).

Why does United World say it is owed about £35 million?

United World says about £35 million of the sale proceeds remains unpaid. That is the former ownership group’s claim, not an amount established by the High Court as a debt in the winding-up ruling. The Guardian’s 19 August report said 1919 Partners acknowledged that £35 million remained outstanding but disputed that the restructuring was connected to the payment dispute (The Guardian, 19 August 2026).

The two sides disagree about the purpose and significance of the restructuring:

Issue United World’s position Current ownership side’s position
Why shares moved to 1919 Partners United World alleges the transfer was intended to avoid paying the remaining sale balance. The owners say it was meant to provide a more flexible platform for investment and long-term financial sustainability, and was unrelated to the dispute.
What remains unpaid United World says about £35 million is still owed from the sale. The Guardian reported that 1919 Partners acknowledged £35 million was outstanding, while disputing its connection to the restructuring.

Neither side’s account of the restructuring’s purpose has been established as fact by the regulatory review. Reports have also used different rounded estimates for the overall sale value—about £100 million in the Guardian’s July report and £110 million in its August report—so neither figure should be treated here as the exact contractual price.

What did the High Court wind up?

On 19 August 2026, the High Court granted United World’s petition to wind up CSBL. The order was against that acquisition company, not Sheffield United Football Club itself. United World said it would continue pursuing the sums it claims through available legal avenues. The Straits Times report, carried with Reuters, on the ruling and The Guardian’s account describe the court action and the parties’ positions.

The order is an established court outcome; it does not by itself resolve the parties’ competing claims about the unpaid balance or whether the restructuring breached football regulations. After the hearing, a Sheffield United spokesperson said the club was in contact with the EFL and that day-to-day operations were unaffected. The EFL said it would consider the implications under its regulations, including whether further action was required (Straits Times/Reuters, 19 August 2026).

Is Sheffield United facing a 12-point deduction?

A deduction has been discussed as a possible consequence, but as of the latest report on 7 October 2026, no 12-point sanction had been reported as imposed. Sheffield United CEO Stephen Bettis said the EFL and Independent Football Regulator (IFR) were still investigating. He said the club’s argument was that CSBL was active and not insolvent while it remained within the ownership group, and that the winding-up order came after it had left the group. The club says this should not trigger a 12-point deduction; that is its argument, not a regulatory finding (The72, 7 October 2026).

The EFL’s public position after the court order was that it would consider the matter under its rules. Until the EFL or IFR completes its review and announces a decision, the deduction remains a reported possibility rather than a confirmed penalty.
