The January 31, 2018 share-price tables are historical reference documents, not current quotes or automatic tax valuations. Their figures may help identify the fair market value used in India’s grandfathered cost rule for certain qualifying long-term assets acquired before February 1, 2018. To use an entry, check the security, exchange and date, then apply the rule in section 55 of the Income-tax Act.
What the January 31, 2018 share-price list contains
The exact-title document hosted on Scribd describes a table of BSE stock codes, company names, the highest price on January 31, 2018, and ISIN codes. Its extracted text includes companies such as ABB Ltd., ACC Ltd. and Axis Bank, and the page says the data was extracted from the BSE Bhavcopy. That describes the hosted document; it does not independently establish that every row is complete or correct. View the exact-title document on Scribd.
A separate, broader Scribd table covers equity-share FMV observations from BSE and NSE. It lists the scrip name, date, exchange and rate. The document says that where a share did not trade on January 31, 2018, it uses the most recent prior trading date. A row showing an earlier date may therefore reflect that fallback rather than an error; inspect the row’s date and exchange. View the broader FMV table on Scribd.
How section 55 uses January 31, 2018 FMV
For a qualifying long-term capital asset covered by section 55(2)(ac) and acquired before February 1, 2018, the deemed acquisition cost is the higher of the actual acquisition cost and the lower of the asset’s January 31, 2018 fair market value or its sale consideration. For listed equity shares, section 55 defines FMV using “the highest price of the capital asset quoted on such exchange on the said date.” Read section 55 in the Income-tax Act.

#1 Best Overall
If the share was not traded on that recognized exchange on January 31, the provision uses its highest price on the immediately preceding date on which it traded there. The exchange matters: the fallback is tied to trading in that security on the relevant recognized exchange, not simply to a price found for the company elsewhere. Official Income Tax Department guidance also summarizes the grandfathering treatment. See Income Tax Department guidance.
How to check an entry before using it
- Match the security. Compare the company or scrip name and, where available, the ISIN or exchange code. A company name alone may not distinguish the relevant share.
- Confirm the exchange. Note whether the entry is for BSE or NSE; the statutory fallback depends on the exchange on which the security traded.
- Read the quote date and price basis. Check whether the row is dated January 31, 2018 or an earlier trading day, and whether the table identifies the figure as the highest price.
- Verify the observation against exchange records. The Scribd-hosted compilations are useful starting points, but their individual rows have not been independently verified here against archived BSE or NSE records.
- Apply the statutory calculation to your facts. Confirm that the asset and holding period qualify, then calculate using the applicable law and current filing guidance rather than treating the table value as a tax result.
What the table can—and cannot—tell you
The tables can help locate a historical share-price observation and identify a possible January 31, 2018 FMV. They do not establish by themselves that a particular entry is accurate, that a taxpayer qualifies for section 55(2)(ac), or how much tax is owed. A complete capital-gains calculation depends on the asset and the taxpayer’s circumstances, and applicable rules or filing guidance may change. Check current official guidance or obtain qualified tax advice for an individual return.
