Amazon said Loew had decided to pursue opportunities outside the company; the May 2025 report announcing his departure gave no effective date. Reporting available through May 2025 does not establish who leads GREF now.
What happened to Amazon’s real estate chief?
Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser told GeekWire that “After almost three years at Amazon, Shannon has decided to pursue other opportunities outside of the company.” The company also said it appreciated Loew’s contributions and wished him well. Amazon did not publicly give a specific date for his departure in the May 2, 2025 report, and it did not describe a reason beyond his decision to pursue work elsewhere. GeekWire’s report contains the company’s statement.
How Loew came to lead Global Real Estate & Facilities
Loew joined Amazon in January 2023 and began overseeing the day-to-day operation of GREF in early 2024. Amazon announced in September 2024 that he would succeed Schoettler as vice president when Schoettler retired at the end of that year, following 23 years at Amazon. GeekWire’s coverage of the succession announcement reported the transition.
GeekWire described Loew as a design and real-estate industry veteran. Before joining Amazon, he founded Fix Impact Development, where he spent 14 years, founded Seattle-based Hatchback Cottages, and worked as a designer at IDEO. The outlet also reported that he earned a Master of Architecture from Harvard, a bachelor’s degree in environmental design from Vassar, and a professional degree in filmmaking from NYU.

What Amazon’s real estate organization does
GREF handles corporate workplace real estate rather than every category of Amazon property. Amazon’s GREF job description says the organization manages corporate offices in more than 60 countries and lists responsibilities including real-estate transactions, space and occupancy planning, design and construction, capital investment, maintenance, and operations.
The scale figures in news coverage refer to office space, not Amazon’s entire real-estate portfolio, and the reports use different country counts:

| Report | Office portfolio figure | Scope and context |
|---|---|---|
| GeekWire, September 2024 | More than 65 million square feet in more than 60 countries | Described Amazon’s office-space footprint at Schoettler’s retirement. |
| CoStar News, May 2025 | Roughly 65 million square feet in around 70 countries | Described Loew’s corporate office workplace portfolio based on his March podcast remarks; CoStar cautioned that this was only part of Amazon’s total real-estate portfolio. |
These figures are not directly interchangeable: they come from different reports and dates, and the country counts differ. Neither should be read as a measure of all Amazon-owned or leased property.

The reporting on Loew’s departure did not say how Amazon would fill the role. CoStar reported on May 6, 2025, that Amazon had not said how the position would be filled. The available reporting does not establish a current GREF leader or show whether Amazon later named a successor, so it would be misleading to describe the role as either vacant or filled.
