Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Serhii Palkin says the club hopes to return to its home, but his remarks do not set a date or promise that a return is imminent. The club left Donetsk in 2014 and has spent years arranging matches elsewhere. Its sporting and commercial effort to keep operating is one story; Ukraine’s much larger reconstruction challenge is another.
What did Shakhtar’s CEO say about going home?
In a May 13, 2025 interview with The Washington Post, Palkin said: “It’s our dream one day to return back to our home.” He also said the return might not happen soon, or under the same players and management, but that the club believed it would happen one day. Palkin is identified as Shakhtar’s CEO on the club’s official management page.

“Dream of Going Home” captures the sentiment, but it should not be read as a verified verbatim phrase from Palkin. His remarks express a long-term hope, not a timetable, a security assessment, or a confirmed relocation plan.
Why can’t Shakhtar play in Donetsk?
Shakhtar left Donetsk in 2014, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The club’s displacement has therefore lasted far longer than the current phase of the war. Its home-match arrangements have shifted between Ukrainian cities and venues abroad rather than remaining fixed in Donetsk.

In October 2024, BBC Sport reported that Shakhtar had played Champions League home matches in six cities. The Washington Post reported in May 2025 that the club was operating in Lviv and needed to travel outside Ukraine for European fixtures. With Ukrainian airspace closed, some journeys were especially burdensome. Those are dated reports, not confirmation of the club’s current venue; the available statements do not establish where it is playing now.
The club’s president, Rinat Akhmetov, tied the homecoming ambition to a specific place in Shakhtar’s official 2025/26 annual report: “And I want all of it to happen, one day, where it should – in a free Ukrainian Donetsk, at our home ground, Donbass Arena.” The statement makes the condition clear: the aspiration is to return to Donetsk when it is free and the club can play there.

How has Shakhtar kept operating during the war?
Shakhtar has had to sustain a club without the normal advantages of a stable home ground, regular local attendance, and predictable travel. The 2024 BBC Sport report described UEFA bonuses and player sales as major post-invasion revenue sources, while sponsorship income had fallen sharply and fans could not attend matches as usual. These were reported conditions at that time, not a verified account of the club’s 2026 finances.

Those comments show how the club was thinking about resilience in that period, but they do not establish which strategies remain in place or how much revenue they generate today. Shakhtar’s 2025/26 annual-report page says the report includes revenue and taxes, but no specific club revenue amount is established here.

Revenue is only part of the challenge. Moving match operations means arranging venues and travel; restricted access affects how teams and staff can move; and reduced in-person attendance limits the usual match-day connection with supporters. The cited reporting describes those pressures, but it does not provide a current cost breakdown or a date when they will ease.
How does the club’s situation compare with Ukraine’s reconstruction needs?
The club’s financial pressures should not be confused with the national cost of recovery. A joint assessment by the World Bank Group, the Government of Ukraine, the European Commission, and the United Nations, released February 23, 2026, estimated Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction needs at almost $588 billion over the next decade. The estimate reflects damage and needs assessed through December 31, 2025, and the release compared it with nearly three times Ukraine’s estimated nominal GDP for 2025.

| What is being measured | What the cited evidence says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Shakhtar’s operating pressures | 2024 reporting described UEFA bonuses and player sales as major revenue sources, with sponsorship income sharply lower and match attendance constrained. | A verified 2026 revenue total, full financial position, or current breakdown of costs. |
| Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction | The joint 2026 assessment estimated almost $588 billion in needs over ten years, based on conditions through December 31, 2025. | Shakhtar’s budget, a club-specific reconstruction cost, or a forecast of near-term GDP growth. |
The comparison is about different kinds of strain, not equivalent budgets. Shakhtar faces club-level issues such as earning income, staging matches, and moving people safely. The national estimate covers recovery and reconstruction needs across Ukraine. It is not a measure of Shakhtar’s finances or a sum the club is expected to fund.
What would a return to Donetsk require?
The statements establish the club’s aspiration, not the conditions or schedule for carrying it out. Akhmetov’s wording connects a return with a free Ukrainian Donetsk; Palkin’s 2025 comments likewise offer no date. Neither statement guarantees when it could happen, what would need to be rebuilt, or whether the same club personnel would be there.

- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
For now, Shakhtar’s homecoming remains a long-term ambition alongside the practical work of competing and operating away from Donetsk. Ukraine’s reconstruction estimate provides national context for the scale of the country’s recovery task, but it cannot be used to calculate the club’s return costs.
