Shafiqa Iqbal: How the Pakistani Data Engineer Was Hired by Google at 24

Pakistani technology outlets reported in 2022 that data engineer Shafiqa Iqbal was hired by Google at age 24 to work at its Warsaw, Poland office. Their accounts describe a Punjab University graduate with data engineering experience in Lahore who was contacted through LinkedIn and passed a multi-stage interview process. They also recount an internet connection failure near the end of an interview, though neither outlet provides a transcript or verified direct quote from the interviewer.

What was reported about Iqbal’s Google hire?

TechJuice and ProPakistani both reported that Iqbal, from Sadiqabad, joined Google at 24 and worked at the company’s Warsaw office. ProPakistani published its account on August 2, 2022. The reports are a historical snapshot: they do not establish her current employer, job title, or subsequent career.

Both outlets describe Iqbal as a Punjab University graduate who had worked as a data engineer in Lahore before Google hired her. ProPakistani says she had about 2.5 years of experience when Google contacted her. That is an estimate about Iqbal’s background, not a general hiring requirement.

What experience did she bring?

TechJuice describes Iqbal’s expertise as including backend development, database migrations, ETL pipelines, cloud solutions, and logical programming. It also reports that she took part in open-source projects and wrote about data engineering. The outlet further says she worked as a top-rated Upwork seller and represented Pakistan as a Global Ambassador of Women in Tech. Those additional details are claims in TechJuice’s profile; the two reports do not independently verify them.

Her reported path therefore combined formal education, work experience, and project activity. The accounts do not show that any one of those elements alone led to the offer, nor do they establish a formula that other applicants can expect to reproduce.

How did Google contact and interview her?

ProPakistani says Google reached out to Iqbal through LinkedIn after she had accumulated about 2.5 years of experience. The reports characterize the selection process as multi-stage or rigorous, but do not provide a complete list of interview rounds, questions, or assessment criteria.

The reported connectivity failure

Both accounts say her internet connection failed during the concluding portion of an interview. TechJuice and ProPakistani paraphrase the interviewer’s response as reassuring and supportive of her candidacy. Neither names the interviewer or supplies an independently authenticated transcript, so the reported response should not be treated as an exact quotation.

What can readers take from the story?

The available accounts document one person’s reported route into a major technology company, not a guaranteed career plan. They describe prior work in data engineering, technical projects, and a recruitment contact through LinkedIn. TechJuice also reports that Iqbal discussed open-source participation and believed young people in Pakistan may not always understand how to navigate recruitment at large technology firms. That is her reported perspective, rather than evidence that open-source work or any particular tactic guarantees an interview or offer.

For readers exploring a similar field, the practical lesson is narrower: build demonstrable skills and experience relevant to the role, and make that work visible to potential employers. Iqbal’s reported experience can offer an example, but the articles do not establish what Google’s current hiring process requires.

What the 2022 reports do—and do not—establish

The central hiring account is consistent across two Pakistani outlets: Iqbal was described as a 24-year-old Pakistani data engineer, a Punjab University graduate, and a former Lahore-based engineer hired for Google’s Warsaw office. The reports do not amount to employment records or a current biography. They cannot confirm her later career, her present status at Google, or the exact language used during the interview.
