The figure is a 2025 media-reported estimate, and the case for accepting losses is a strategic interpretation—not a stated Apple rationale or a financial result attributed to Severance.
What the reported $1 billion figure means—and what it does not
On March 20, 2025, Reuters reported that The Information, citing two people familiar with the matter, put Apple TV+’s annual losses at more than $1 billion. Reuters said Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. That makes the figure a reported estimate based on unnamed sources, not an audited result, a company-confirmed figure, or a loss disclosed for a particular show.
Apple’s public financial reporting does not break out Apple TV’s revenue, subscriber count, or profit. The company’s Q3 fiscal 2026 Form 10-Q reports Services as a group, not Apple TV separately. So even with Apple’s overall Services performance in view, readers cannot use it to verify the streaming service’s individual economics.
Keep the reported figures in separate lanes
Several numbers help describe the service’s scale, but they come from different sources and measure different things. None should be treated as a complete profit-and-loss statement.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Annual losses | More than $1 billion a year, according to The Information as reported by Reuters on March 20, 2025; attributed to two unnamed people familiar with the matter. | A media-reported estimate, not an Apple-disclosed result. |
| Content spending | More than $5 billion a year since launch, according to The Information as reported by Reuters on March 20, 2025; the same report said Apple reduced that spending by about $500 million in 2024. | Reported content spending, not total service costs and not the same measure as net losses. |
| Subscribers, estimate one | 40.4 million at the end of 2024, based on a poll of five analysts by Visible Alpha, as reported by Reuters on March 20, 2025. | An analyst estimate, not a company count. |
| Subscribers, estimate two | About 45 million, according to The Information as relayed by TechCrunch on March 20, 2025. | A separate estimate; Apple does not disclose a subscriber count in the sources reviewed. |
| U.S. viewing share | Less than 1% of total U.S. streaming viewing in February, according to The Information as relayed by MacRumors on March 20, 2025. | A reported viewing-share figure, not a current independently verified market-share measurement. |
The subscriber estimates should not be combined or averaged: they come through different reporting and are not presented as the same measurement. Likewise, content spending is only one category of expense. It cannot tell us the service’s full costs, its revenue, or how much Apple loses after accounting for both.
Why Apple might accept streaming losses
If the reported loss estimate is broadly accurate, one possible business rationale is that Apple could value the service for more than its standalone profit. A subscription service can be part of a broader strategy to attract or retain customers, give people another reason to use Apple services, and build a distinctive programming catalog. Those are plausible strategic benefits, not a confirmed explanation from Apple for the reported figure.

That distinction matters especially for Severance. A standout series can raise a service’s profile and contribute to the value of its catalog, but the available reporting does not establish that Apple is losing a billion dollars because of Severance, that the show drove a particular number of subscriptions, or that Apple has chosen a specific level of losses to keep making it.
Recognition and viewing growth are signals, not proof of profit
Apple’s January 2026 newsroom release said Apple TV had reached 672 award wins and 3,085 nominations, and identified Severance as the most-awarded drama at the 2025 Emmys. Awards can demonstrate industry recognition, but they do not show how much a program earns or how many customers it brings in.

The same release said total Apple TV viewing hours rose 36% year over year in December 2025, setting a monthly engagement record. Apple named several contributors, including F1, Pluribus, and The Family Plan 2; it did not attribute that growth to Severance alone or connect it to profitability. Engagement and awards may support the strategic case for investing in programming, but neither answers whether the service makes money.
Why Apple’s Services revenue does not settle the question
MacRumors reported in March 2025 that Apple had generated more than $96 billion in Services revenue in its most recent fiscal year at that time. That figure covers the Services group, not Apple TV by itself. Apple’s Q3 fiscal 2026 filing likewise reports Services as a group rather than disclosing Apple TV’s own revenue or profit. A large or growing Services business therefore cannot be used as a substitute for the streaming service’s unreported results.

Apple’s naming has also varied by date: Reuters’ March 2025 coverage called the service Apple TV+, while Apple’s January 2026 newsroom material calls it Apple TV. The name change in those materials does not fill the gap in service-specific financial disclosure.

“Why Apple TV+ is worth losing $1 billion a year” is best understood as a question about strategic trade-offs, not a confirmed statement of Apple’s motive. The loss number remains an anonymously sourced 2025 estimate; Apple has not publicly confirmed it in the filings described above. The evidence supports a discussion of possible strategic value and signs of audience or critical momentum, but it does not establish that those benefits outweigh the losses—or that Severance is the reason Apple accepts them.
