Serra Pelada, the former gold-mining site in Pará, Brazil, has a possible path toward a restart—but the available record does not show that mining has resumed. In April 2026, Helius Minerals said Brazil’s mining regulator had granted the project a conditional extension to commence mining. The extension was not proof that the required conditions were met, that the project is ready to operate, or that gold production restarted.
Has Serra Pelada reopened?
No restart is established by the available information. Helius Minerals said in an April 22, 2026 announcement that Serra Pelada had been dormant since 2014 and that Brazil’s National Mining Agency (ANM) had granted the concession holder a one-year extension to commence mining in March 2026. Helius said the authorization was conditional on regulatory, environmental and corporate requirements being satisfied within an extendable 60-day period.
Those are two different time periods: the reported one-year extension to commence mining, and the 60-day window to satisfy conditions, which Helius said could be extended. The announcement reports a regulatory decision, but it is a company disclosure, not the text of ANM’s decision. The available sources do not establish that the conditions were fulfilled or that commercial operations began.
What the restart timeline does—and does not—show
| Date | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | Helius later described the project as dormant since this year. | A company-reported period of dormancy, not a production restart schedule. |
| March 2026 | Helius said ANM granted a one-year extension to commence mining, subject to requirements being met within an extendable 60-day period. | A conditional pathway and additional time, not confirmation that mining started. |
| June 8, 2026 | Helius described an option transaction and the then-reported interests in SPCDM. | A dated account by an interested company; not, by itself, confirmation of a completed acquisition or title transfer. |
| June 30 and August 4, 2026 | Helius’s announcement index lists an option-exercise announcement and an injunction-related update, respectively. | The index headlines show that further developments were announced, but do not establish their detailed legal effect or the final transaction status. |
ANM’s own public account, originally published July 1, 2020 and updated July 30, 2025, concerns a separate but important part of the site’s history: an unfinished tailings dam. The agency said the dam was abandoned by prior responsible parties in 2014 and is now under federal responsibility. It described maintenance to the emergency spillway, drainage channels and slopes. That documents a continuing stewardship obligation; it does not establish that every part of the site is unsafe or determine whether a proposed mine plan can meet its obligations.

- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- BLACK SAND MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The separator magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes straight off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
Who owns or controls the Serra Pelada project?
Ownership and transaction status should be described with dates, because Helius’s account changed during 2026. In its June 8 announcement, Helius said Colossus Brazil held 75% of SPCDM and the cooperative COOMIGASP held the remaining 25%; SPCDM was described as holding the project. Helius characterized its arrangement as an option transaction and noted outstanding closing steps at that time.
Helius’s announcement index subsequently listed an option-exercise announcement dated June 30 and an injunction-related update dated August 4. Those titles alone do not show whether a transaction closed, how any injunction affected it, or who holds the relevant interests now. The June 8 ownership description should therefore be read as a dated company account, not a verified statement of present ownership.

Why a conditional extension is not a mine restart
A regulatory window can create an opportunity to advance a project without resolving the practical and legal questions that determine whether extraction can begin. In Serra Pelada’s case, the distinction matters because the reported extension was expressly conditional, the project had been dormant, and later corporate and legal announcements may affect control of the project.
- Regulatory compliance: The available sources do not confirm that every condition attached to the reported extension was satisfied.
- Environmental and site obligations: ANM’s account of federal maintenance at the unfinished tailings dam shows an ongoing safety and stewardship responsibility, not a completed remediation or an independent assessment of the proposed restart.
- Corporate and legal status: Helius reported later transaction and injunction-related announcements, but the index headlines do not establish their full effect or the final status of the transaction.
- Operational evidence: The available sources do not provide a verified production start, current technical assessment, economic feasibility study, production forecast, environmental impact assessment or restart schedule.
Until those points are documented, “revival” describes a proposal and conditional pathway—not an operating gold mine.

What the national mining figures can tell readers
A March 23, 2026 article in Indian Defence Review attributed national figures to an Instituto Escolhas study based on ANM data and said Reuters had reported the study. It described 3,943 Brazilian mining sites as showing signs of abandonment, or 11% of authorized operations. The article also attributed to Instituto Escolhas an estimate that 96–185 tonnes of potentially illegal mercury were used in Brazil between 2018 and 2022.
These are national estimates as reported secondhand in that article, not measurements of Serra Pelada. The study and Reuters report were not independently checked here, so the figures should not be treated as independently verified evidence about conditions at the mine. They add national context, but cannot establish the state of the site or the feasibility of restarting it.

What would need to be verified next
A clear answer on Serra Pelada’s status requires more than a company announcement headline or a deadline extension. The most useful confirmations would be the underlying ANM decision and evidence that its conditions were met; current regulatory and environmental approvals; a technically and economically supported mine plan; an updated account of tailings-dam responsibilities and site conditions; and complete documents establishing the project’s current corporate and legal status. The available sources do not establish those outcomes.
