As of the latest available premarket report on October 7, 2026, a higher Indian market open was not confirmed: GIFT Nifty indicated a tepid to negative start amid mixed global cues and caution ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s policy decision. The latest reported closing figures are from October 6, when both the Sensex and Nifty 50 finished higher.

What the latest market reports say

NDTV Profit’s October 7 premarket report described mixed Asian markets, gains on Wall Street overnight and investor caution before the RBI decision. Its GIFT Nifty signal pointed to a tepid or negative start, but that is an indication—not an exchange opening price. [NDTV Profit]

The available reports do not establish October 7 live Sensex or Nifty 50 levels, or confirm how the indices actually opened. NSE regular equity trading begins at 09:15 IST on trading days, following a pre-open session listed at 09:00. [NSE market timings]

Where the Sensex and Nifty closed on October 6

The Economic Times reported that the Sensex closed at 73,067.81 on October 6, 2026, up 685.34 points (0.95%). The Nifty 50 closed at 22,776.10, up 220.35 points (0.9%). The report linked the gains to bank stocks, lower oil prices and positive macro cues. [The Economic Times]

October 6 intraday readings are not October 7 live prices

At 9:40 am IST on October 6, India Today reported the Sensex at 72,596.30, up 213.83 points (0.30%) from its 72,508.05 open. The Nifty 50 was at 22,596.75, up 43 points (0.19%), after opening at 22,603.25. These are time-stamped October 6 readings, not current October 7 quotes. [India Today]

Hindustan Times also described the October 6 opening as higher, citing global developments and positive quarterly business updates ahead of the RBI decision. Its report put the previous session’s Sensex and Nifty advances at approximately 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively. [Hindustan Times]

Why the RBI decision is in focus

Reports published October 6 said the RBI policy decision was due Wednesday, October 7. The Economic Times reported that its poll expected a 25-basis-point increase, taking the policy rate to 5.50%. That is a poll expectation, not an announced decision; the available information does not verify the RBI’s actual outcome. [The Economic Times]

What investors should take from the setup

Positive October 6 closes and a cautious October 7 premarket signal describe different sessions, not a contradiction. For a live check, use exchange quotes after trading begins and confirm the timestamp: premarket indications can differ from the opening print, and yesterday’s close is not today’s price.

NDTV Profit quoted Ajit Mishra, SVP–Research at Religare Broking: “With the broader market structure remaining cautious amid elevated global macro risks, volatility is likely to stay high, favouring a selective, stock-specific approach as opportunities emerge.” This is an analyst view, not a guaranteed forecast.
