The headline figures round those exact closing losses and levels. Both benchmarks had fallen further at their intraday lows.
How far did the Sensex and Nifty fall?
The historical closing figures reported by The Indian Express on 23 March 2020 show a sharp decline in both major Indian benchmarks. The Economic Times’ report that day also gave closing figures consistent with these numbers.
| Benchmark | Points lost at close | Percentage lost | Closing level | Intraday low |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P BSE Sensex | 3,934.72 | 13.15% | 25,981.24 | 25,880.83, down 4,035.13 points (13.49%) |
| Nifty 50 | 1,135.20 | 12.98% | 7,610.25 | 7,583.60, down 1,161.85 points (13.29%) |
The intraday lows are not the closing levels: each index recovered slightly from its low before the market closed. The Indian Express described the session as the worst performance for both benchmarks in their history as reported on that date; that characterization is tied to the source’s contemporary comparison, not a claim about records set later.
Why was trading halted?
In early trading, both indices reached their 10% lower-circuit levels, triggering a circuit breaker and a 45-minute suspension, according to The Indian Express. Before the halt, the Sensex was reported down 2,991.85 points at 26,924.11, and the Nifty was down 842.45 points at 7,903.00. Trading resumed after the suspension, and losses deepened. The circuit-trigger halt was a temporary interruption; it did not prevent the benchmarks from falling further during the session.

What was happening around the selloff?
Contemporaneous reporting placed the plunge amid coronavirus-related lockdowns and curfews announced in several Indian states, heavy losses in global markets, and growing recession concerns. Vinod Nair, then Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said in a post-market update on 23 March: “With the spread of Covid-19 continuing unabated and the fears of global recession increasing, the Indian markets crashed.”
That statement is an analyst’s interpretation at the time, not an official exchange finding or proof that any one factor caused the decline. The Indian Express also reported that the Indian indices fell more sharply in percentage terms than Asian and European markets, amid uncertainty about the virus’s spread in India and the prospect of shutdowns.
