Semiconductor bust-boom cycles happen when shifts in chip demand meet slow-moving production capacity. Strong demand and tight supply can prompt bigger orders and investment; by the time new capacity is ready, customers may be ordering less or using up excess inventory. Prices, production and investment can then weaken together. The cycle is a feedback process—not a reliable four-year calendar—and conditions can differ sharply between chip segments.
Why is the semiconductor industry cyclical?
Chipmakers serve end markets including computers, communications, industrial equipment and automobiles. When demand rises faster than available supply, customers may order extra components to secure them. Strong sales and tight capacity can support prices and encourage chipmakers and equipment suppliers to invest.
Investment does not become saleable output immediately. Planning, facility construction, equipment installation, qualification and production ramping take time. If demand softens or customers cut precautionary orders before added supply is absorbed, inventories can build. Sales and pricing may weaken, leading companies to reduce production or delay capital spending. Recovery can begin unevenly as inventories normalize and end-market demand returns.
This is a useful way to understand the cycle, not a universal sequence with one cause. For example, SEMI’s February 2025 summary of its Q4 2024 Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor reported that semiconductor capital expenditure fell in the first half of 2024 and rebounded in Q4, while inventory challenges persisted in discrete, analog and optoelectronic segments. It also described investment in leading-edge logic, advanced packaging and high-bandwidth memory capacity. SEMI’s monitor summary shows why investment and inventory conditions need to be read together.

How long does a semiconductor cycle last?
A roughly four-year boom-bust cycle is a common industry shorthand. A 2024 Morningstar industry outlook connects that approximate interval to the time needed to plan, build and ramp capacity. It is not a statistically established law or a dependable schedule: product cycles, technology changes, macroeconomic conditions, capacity constraints and the trigger for an inventory correction can all affect how long a phase lasts. Different chip segments may not turn at the same time.
What causes chip shortages and oversupply?
Shortages can encourage defensive ordering
When available supply cannot keep up with demand, customers may increase orders to secure components. Those orders can reflect both current needs and efforts to build buffers, so the order signal may not match final demand exactly.

Capacity takes time to arrive
Companies make investment decisions in response to expected demand, but new facilities and equipment require time to become qualified production. If demand changes during that interval, supply can arrive after customers have reduced orders or worked down inventories.
Inventory correction can amplify a slowdown
When customers and producers hold more stock than they need, they may pause purchases or cut production while inventory is absorbed. That can weaken shipments and pricing, even if underlying demand has not disappeared. SEMI’s February 2025 release quoted TechInsights Director of Market Analysis Boris Metodiev saying inventory challenges persisted for discrete, analog and optoelectronic manufacturers, illustrating that corrections can be segment-specific.

What do the latest annual figures say?
In its March 6, 2026 finalized release, World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) reported worldwide semiconductor sales of USD 795.6 billion in 2025, up 26.2% year over year. Q4 sales were USD 238.9 billion, up 38.4% year over year. WSTS attributed the main expansion to computers, logic and memory, including data-center and AI-related demand; it said the computer segment grew by more than 60% for the year and industrial demand returned to growth by 5%. Read WSTS’s finalized 2025 release.
The scale of that annual growth does not mean every chip category was booming equally. WSTS identified logic and memory as the largest product-category contributors, while SEMI’s earlier monitor described inventory challenges in selected segments. The 2025 figures describe the year as a whole, not the condition of every product market or company.
There is a difference between two published 2025 totals. SIA’s February 6, 2026 announcement reported USD 791.7 billion in sales and 25.6% growth; WSTS’s later March 6 release, based on finalized fourth-quarter data, reported USD 795.6 billion and 26.2% growth. Use the later finalized WSTS figure when citing one annual total; the figures should not be averaged. SIA president and CEO John Neuffer said in February 2026 that global sales were projected to reach roughly USD 1 trillion in 2026. That was a forecast at the time, not a verified 2026 result. SIA’s February 2026 announcement.
For context, SIA reported USD 527 billion in global sales in 2023 and characterized the cyclical downturn as over in September 2024. That was the association’s contemporaneous description, rather than an independently measured boundary for the cycle. SIA’s September 2024 report.

How to tell which phase the industry is in
Revenue alone can hide what is happening. A sales increase can reflect more units, higher average selling prices, or both. Compare several indicators over the same time periods and regions:
- Sales and shipments: Check revenue alongside units and average selling prices.
- Product and end market: Separate logic, memory, analog, discrete and sensor trends, and look at end uses such as computers and industrial equipment.
- Inventory: Determine whether customers or producers are still correcting excess stock or rebuilding supply buffers.
- Capital expenditure and equipment: Look for whether investment is falling, recovering or concentrated in particular bottlenecks and product segments.
- Capacity and utilization: Distinguish planned or installed capacity from output that has been qualified and ramped.
- Time period and geography: Compare like with like, and distinguish sequential changes from year-over-year growth.
SIA says WSTS monthly reports break shipments down by product type, end use and region, with value, unit and average-price data; the historical series reaches back to 1976. SIA says the statistics are collected from member companies, aggregated and anonymized, and released within five weeks of month-end. Historical data and forecasts are available through subscription products, and SIA’s terms restrict external reproduction or redistribution. SIA’s market-data page describes the coverage. SEMI’s monitor brings sales, capital equipment and fab capacity together, which helps explain why multiple indicators are more informative than a single headline total.
Why the cycle matters to personal-finance readers
For investors, workers and businesses exposed to the chip industry, a headline boom or bust is not enough to judge risk. A broad revenue increase may be concentrated in a few product categories or end markets, while other segments remain in an inventory correction. Likewise, announced capacity is not the same as qualified output, and a forecast should not be mistaken for a realized result.
When evaluating a company or an industry claim, check which products and customers drive its sales, whether inventory is rising or normalizing, and how new investment maps to demand. Treat a four-year cycle as context—not as a timing rule for investment decisions.
