To sell an engagement ring, gather its paperwork, get a realistic value reference, and compare written offers and selling terms from more than one route. There is no reliable universal resale percentage: what a buyer offers depends on the ring and the terms of the sale, and an appraisal is not a guaranteed offer.
What determines an engagement ring’s value?
An appraisal estimates value for a particular purpose and market context. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says a fair-market-value appraisal reflects an appraiser’s opinion of what a willing buyer would pay a willing seller. Relevant factors include gemstone or jewelry quality, availability, desirability in your area and, for a mounted piece, current fashion. That estimate is a reference point—not a promise that a buyer will pay the appraised amount.
There is no supported resale percentage that applies to every engagement ring. The amount you can realize depends on the specific piece and the buyer, channel, and terms. GIA’s consumer guidance recommends getting a fair-market-value appraisal if you do not know what to ask for.
Understand your paperwork before setting a price
A grading report is not an appraisal
A diamond grading report gives technical information about a diamond’s dimensions, quality and identifying characteristics. It does not assign an appraisal value. GIA explains the distinction in its diamond report guidance and jewelry appraisal guidance. If you arrange an appraisal, ask what kind of value it estimates and which market or geography it applies to.

Gather records and describe the stone accurately
Put the grading report, original receipt, any prior appraisal, and available records of treatments or repairs together. Note the stone’s origin, weight or size, treatments and care details when known. Distinguish a natural diamond from a laboratory-created diamond and from a simulated stone; these are not interchangeable descriptions. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s jewelry guidance says advertising claims should be accurate and not misleading, including claims about a stone’s nature and treatments.
Compare ways to sell the ring
Different routes trade off speed, potential buyer reach, payment timing and costs. Compare the amount you expect to keep and the agreement—not just the headline offer.

For every route, ask who holds the ring, how it is insured while held or shipped, what fees apply, and what inspection or return conditions govern the transaction. Compare expected net proceeds after costs, payment timing, buyer reach and whether you receive cash or store credit. No route is guaranteed to produce the best price for every ring.
Get an appraisal or offers without confusing the two
- Organize your records. Bring the grading report, receipt, prior appraisal and available treatment or repair records to any appraisal or buyer appointment.
- Ask an appraiser what the figure means. Confirm the valuation purpose and the market or geography considered; do not treat an appraisal as a guaranteed sale price.
- Request written offers from multiple buyers or services. Confirm whether each offer is cash or credit, final or conditional, and whether fees or deductions may apply.
- Compare the full terms. For consignment and auction in particular, get the commission or seller fees, reserve or minimum-price rules, custody and insurance arrangements, timeline, and unsold-item return terms in writing.
- Keep a copy of the final agreement and sale description. Make sure the description accurately states what is known about the stone and any treatments.
Protect the ring while it is being evaluated or sold
- Before handing over or shipping the ring, document its condition and confirm who is responsible for its security and insurance while it is in their possession.
- Get custody, shipping, inspection, payment and return terms in writing. Ask what happens if the buyer’s inspection changes the offer or if an auction or consignment sale does not succeed.
- Do not rely on a verbal estimate as a final offer. A buyer may condition an offer on inspection or testing.
- A 10x jeweler’s loupe is optional for close viewing, not a substitute for professional grading, authentication or appraisal. The FTC’s clarity descriptions use 10-power magnification, but owning a loupe is not necessary to sell a ring.
Make the sale description truthful
State the stone’s nature and known treatments clearly, along with material details such as weight or size, origin and care needs when known. Do not call a simulated stone a diamond, blur the distinction between laboratory-created and mined diamonds, or present a grading report as a dollar valuation. FTC guidance applies to U.S. advertising and consumer claims; local ownership questions and sale requirements can vary by jurisdiction.
