SECP Clarifies Claims About Foreign Companies Leaving Pakistan

SECP’s reported clarification distinguishes a 125-company historical list dating to 1977 from the 19 cessations reported for 2022–2025, alongside 79 new registrations.

SECP’s clarification, as reported in February 2026, was that the widely cited list of 125 foreign companies that ceased operations in Pakistan covered a long historical span beginning in 1977—not a wave of 125 recent departures. For 2022–2025, the reports attributed to SECP 19 cessations and 79 new foreign-company registrations.

Why the 125-company figure was misleading without its time span

The reports said the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) viewed claims of a large recent foreign-company exodus as a misunderstanding of information on its website. The list at issue contained 125 companies, but the reported cessation years extended back to 1977. It was therefore a cumulative list across decades, not a count of companies that had left in the recent period.

TechJuice and Customs Today both reported that each company on the list had a cessation year. Their accounts describe SECP’s position; neither retrieved report provides the underlying company-level records for independent verification.

What the reports say happened from 2022 to 2025

Measure Reported figure How to interpret it
Foreign-company cessations 19 Companies reportedly halted operations in Pakistan during 2022–2025.
New foreign-company registrations 79 Foreign companies reportedly registered during the same period.
Foreign companies remaining registered 1,157 Reported as of February 2026; this is a dated snapshot, not an October 2026 count.

The 19 and 79 figures are attributed to SECP by TechJuice and Customs Today. They describe cessations and registrations, respectively, not a complete measure of investment flows or the performance of foreign businesses. The reports do not provide enough detail to calculate a net change in the registered-company population from those two figures alone.

Other figures in the February 2026 reports

The reports also said foreign investors had invested in 82 local companies in the preceding month. They do not identify that month by calendar name, so the figure should not be assigned to a specific month. It is a separate reported activity measure, not evidence by itself of the scale or direction of overall foreign investment.

What the clarification does—and does not—establish

  • It corrects the time-window interpretation: 125 refers to cessations across a period beginning in 1977, while 19 refers to the reported 2022–2025 period.
  • It places that recent cessation figure alongside 79 reported new registrations in the same period.
  • It does not independently establish the status of every company, explain why each ceased operations, or prove a broader change in Pakistan’s investment climate. The underlying SECP dataset or statement was not included in the two retrieved news reports.

Customs Today published its account on 24 February 2026. TechJuice’s page lists Waleeja Khan as the byline but displays only a relative publication age, not a calendar date. TechJuice’s report and Customs Today’s report are the published sources for these attributed figures; neither provides the primary registry records.
