Seattle’s Population Is Still Growing, Even as Big-City Growth Slows

Seattle’s population rose to 784,777 in 2025, even as growth among large U.S. cities slowed. The available figures do not confirm a top-10 ranking claim.

Seattle did not lose residents: the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city had 784,777 people on July 1, 2025, up 11,572 from a year earlier. Growth across large U.S. cities slowed overall, but the available figures do not verify the claim that Seattle fell out of the top 10 fastest-growing big cities. That ranking depends on the year, the definition of “big,” and whether growth is measured by percentage or number of residents.

Is Seattle’s population still growing?

Yes. The Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 city estimates put Seattle’s population at 784,777 on July 1, 2025, a one-year increase of 11,572. The estimate covers Seattle city proper, not the wider Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The Census Bureau’s May 14, 2026 release reports the city-level figures.

That annual gain is compatible with a slowdown in growth. A city can keep adding residents while growing more slowly than it did before, or more slowly than other cities. A lower position in a growth ranking would be a relative change, not evidence that Seattle’s population fell.

Did Seattle fall out of the top 10 fastest-growing big cities?

The claim cannot be confirmed from the Census Bureau releases and related analysis cited here. A defensible top-10 ranking must identify its comparison period and Census estimate vintage, define which cities count as “big,” and say whether “fastest-growing” means the largest percentage increase or the largest numeric gain. Those measures can produce different rankings.

The latest figures establish that Seattle added residents in 2024–25; they do not, by themselves, establish its place in a particular top-10 ranking. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2025 city and town estimates provide the relevant city population series, but comparisons should be calculated from one consistent vintage.

How does Seattle compare with the wider big-city slowdown?

The Census Bureau described a broad slowdown in city population growth between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025. Matt Erickson, a statistician in the Bureau’s Population Division, said, “Big-city growth slowed significantly between 2024 and 2025, with some major hubs even seeing small declines.” The statement describes the national pattern, not a decline in Seattle.

Brookings’ September 2026 analysis found that aggregate growth among the 92 largest U.S. cities eased from 1.13% in 2023–24 to 0.31% in 2024–25. It also found that seven cities with more than 250,000 residents, including Seattle, grew by more than 1.5% in 2024–25. These are different comparisons: the aggregate rate describes the group overall, while the seven-city finding identifies cities whose individual rates exceeded that threshold. Brookings’ analysis uses Census estimates.

What does Seattle’s longer-term growth show?

The Census Bureau reports that Seattle grew 6.5% from 2020 to 2025. That five-year percentage gives a different perspective from the city’s one-year numeric gain; neither figure should be substituted for a ranking based on another period or metric. The Bureau’s account of metro-area growth also shows varied outcomes among places around Seattle, with some growing faster and others declining. The Census Bureau’s metro-area analysis distinguishes city and surrounding-area patterns.

Why Census population estimates can change

Annual city estimates are not fixed counts. The Census Bureau uses updated housing-unit estimates to distribute county household population to subcounty areas based on average household population per housing unit, then adds an estimate of group-quarters population. When a new annual vintage is released, the Bureau revises the time series back to the last census. As a result, a comparison should use figures from the same vintage rather than mixing estimates published in different years. The Bureau explains the estimates and revisions in its May 2025 city and town estimates release and its city and town population tables.
