Seattlepi.com’s 2022 Newsletter Strategy: What Hearst Planned—and What’s Still Unknown

Hearst’s 2022 plan paired Seattlepi.com’s reporting with a daily curated newsletter and a small Seattle-based team. Its later status remains unverified.

In January 2022, Hearst said it would keep publishing Seattlepi.com and build a daily newsletter around original reporting and useful curation for Seattle readers. The plan called for a Seattle-region city editor and a small team, backed by shared Hearst resources. The announcement described an intended next phase for the site; available sources do not establish whether that specific newsletter launched or what became of it.

What Hearst announced for Seattlepi.com

Hearst described its plan as “a newsletter strategy that complements seattlepi.com and takes advantage of original reporting and curates the most important information for Seattleites,” according to GeekWire’s January 20, 2022 report. The company was hiring a city editor to develop and write a daily newsletter intended to deliver useful Seattle news and build on the publication’s journalistic legacy.

The stated approach paired original reporting with curation rather than treating the newsletter as a replacement for the website. Hearst characterized the effort as investment and growth. It described an entrepreneurial team supported by product, business-intelligence, and editorial leaders across its newspaper organization. The city editor role was to be based in the Seattle region; an initial job-posting error had suggested another location.

Why the plan drew attention

The announcement came during a sharp newsroom contraction. GeekWire reported that Seattlepi.com had two editorial staffers in January 2022, compared with about 20 a decade earlier. Hearst said the rebuilt team would be comparable in size to the site’s prior-year staff, which GeekWire reported as three to five people. Those are figures reported in that article, not a current staffing count or an independent audit.

A former staffer told GeekWire that the larger earlier newsroom could specialize in coverage, and said she perceived traffic growth as an overriding focus as positions went unfilled. For broader context, the article cited a Pew Research Center analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing a 45% decline in U.S. newspaper newsroom employment from 2010 to 2020. The report said Seattlepi.com’s reduction appeared more pronounced; the national figure does not itself measure the site.

GeekWire also reviewed Seattle Public Library’s article database to compare the site’s output in two Decembers. It counted about 85 local news, lifestyle, and weather stories in December 2021, alongside 45 items under “shopping,” a category that included discounts, concert-ticket news, and Seahawks viewing tips. For December 2016, the report counted more than 170 local-news articles and described a stronger emphasis on government and crime coverage. These are the article’s approximate counts for those months, not annual totals or current publishing rates.

The audience figures were historical company claims

Hearst told GeekWire that Seattlepi.com had consistently drawn more than one million monthly readers over the preceding five years. GeekWire contrasted that company-reported figure with a four-million-monthly-reader audience cited in a Hearst press release in 2012. Neither number is a current audience measurement, and the report provides no verified newsletter subscriber count, open rate, or revenue.

The historical scale of the Seattle P-I should also be kept distinct from the later website newsroom: GeekWire put the print-era operation at about 160 employees before the final print edition on March 17, 2009. That figure describes the newspaper operation, not Seattlepi.com’s online editorial staff.

Seattle’s newsletter market was already crowded

GeekWire’s January 2022 market snapshot named The Evergrey, SEAToday, the then-forthcoming Seattle expansion of Axios Local, The Stranger, KUOW, Crosscut, and The Seattle Times among the city’s newsletter or general-interest news landscape. The report also mentioned Substack and Mailchimp as newsletter tools. This is a snapshot of what the article discussed at that time; it does not establish those outlets’ current Seattle operations, market share, or comparative performance.

Local media figures offered reasons publishers might use newsletters, but not evidence of Seattlepi.com’s results. Mónica Guzmán, then identified as a former WhereBy.Us co-founder, said routine delivery can build reader habit. She also argued that sponsored newsletter content may draw more attention and engagement per reader than general website advertising, while noting newsletters’ smaller scale. Hanson Hosein, president of HRH Media and co-founder of the University of Washington Communication Leadership graduate program, argued that a distinct editorial voice can help a small newsroom. These were expert observations, not quantified findings about Seattlepi.com.

Did the planned daily newsletter launch?

The available evidence does not resolve that question. The 2022 GeekWire report documents Hearst’s intention, not a confirmed launch or subsequent publishing history. Hearst’s privacy notice, last updated July 1, 2026, recognizes newsletter signups as a general Hearst service, and a Seattlepi.com page surfaced with an “Email Newsletters” link. Neither identifies the specific daily product announced in 2022 or confirms its current cadence, staffing, audience, or status.

Accordingly, the defensible account is limited: Hearst planned a daily Seattlepi.com newsletter as part of a broader strategy in January 2022. Whether that exact initiative launched, continued, or changed format remains unverified.
