The startup in the headline is Carbon Robotics, a Seattle agricultural-robotics company. The “fastest growing” description came from Voyager Capital managing director Erik Benson in a 2022 GeekWire interview; it was his assessment, not a verified ranking of companies. Benson also forecast that Carbon could become a “future $50 billion company”—a prediction, not a reported valuation.
Who made the fastest-growing-company claim?
GeekWire reported on February 7, 2022, that Benson said, “Carbon is the fastest growing company I’ve seen in 23 years of VC.” The 23 years refers to his investing experience, as expressed in the quote. The report did not provide a comparative growth dataset or independent ranking to substantiate the superlative.
Benson’s separate “future $50 billion company” remark was also a forecast. It should not be read as Carbon Robotics’ valuation, a funding amount, or an outcome that had already occurred.
What does Carbon Robotics make?
Carbon Robotics develops agricultural robotics. The 2022 GeekWire report focused on its LaserWeeder, a tractor-pulled implement that used computer vision and AI to identify weeds, then used thermal energy from lasers to kill them. The company’s founder and CEO, Paul Mikesell, said the technology could benefit farmers through healthier crops and soil, less herbicide use, and lower chemical and labor costs. That was a company statement quoted in the report, not an independent study.

The 2022 LaserWeeder
GeekWire described the 2022 model as spanning roughly 20 feet across three crop rows, with 30 industrial CO2 lasers and average coverage of two acres per hour. These are historical figures for the machine discussed in that 2022 report, not specifications for every later model.
Carbon’s current product lineup
Carbon Robotics’ current company website lists LaserWeeder G2 and Carbon Autonomy. The company describes Carbon Autonomy as a tractor-autonomy solution that installs on certain Deere 6R, 8R, 8RX, and 8RT tractors from model year 2019 onward without permanent modifications.

What did the 2022 report say about company growth?
The GeekWire story said Carbon Robotics was founded in 2018 and led by Isilon Systems co-founder Paul Mikesell. It reported that the company had raised $27 million in a funding round the preceding September and $36 million in total at the time. Voyager Capital, Anthos Capital, Ignition Capital, and Fuse were among the investors named.

The same story reported 35 employees and a plan to grow to 50 during 2022. It also said the 2022 LaserWeeder was sold out and Carbon was taking pre-orders for 2023. Those statements describe the company’s reported position and plans at the time; they do not establish present-day funding, staffing, or product availability.

The claim is useful as an attributed expression of one investor’s enthusiasm, but it is not evidence that Carbon was objectively the fastest-growing company. The 2022 article supplied neither a definition of “fastest growing” nor comparable growth data across companies. Similarly, Benson’s $50 billion comment expressed his expectation of future potential, not a current valuation.
