Uber and Lyft drivers protested outside Uber’s downtown Seattle engineering offices on February 25, 2026, asking the companies to stop adding drivers to what organizers called a “flooded” market. Drivers Union called for a pause in onboarding until empty miles decline and for rules to keep driver supply from outpacing trip growth. The request is an organizing demand; the available reporting does not show that either platform accepted it.
What happened at the Seattle protest
Drivers gathered during rush hour outside Uber’s engineering offices at Second Avenue and Seneca Street. Their central demand was that Uber and Lyft stop adding drivers in Seattle. Drivers Union president Takele Gobena said the union was ready for “fair rules for a balanced market that benefits everyone.” GeekWire’s February 26 report quoted Gobena from a Drivers Union news release.
The union’s protest account specifies two requests: pause onboarding until unnecessary empty miles decline, and establish rules for a balanced market in which driver supply does not keep growing faster than trips. The protest was directed at both platforms, but the reported gathering was outside Uber’s office.
What Drivers Union says its trip data shows
Drivers Union says its analysis drew on almost one million local Uber trips, with work supported by researchers at Princeton University and the University of Washington. In its February 25 report summary, the union says a majority of local Uber miles are now driven without a passenger. It reports average deadheading—the miles a driver travels without a passenger—rose from 3.5 miles per trip in 2019 to 9.9 miles per trip in 2024. It also says the number of rideshare drivers was increasing nearly seven times faster than trip growth.

Those are Drivers Union’s figures and interpretation. They describe the union’s analysis; the cited coverage does not independently validate the calculations or establish that the reported trend alone caused a particular change in driver earnings, congestion, or pollution.
How Uber disputes the union’s explanation
Uber called the report based on “an extremely small, unrepresentative sample of drivers,” according to GeekWire. The company also argued that state pay regulations had raised Seattle fares by 40% on average, reducing trip demand and making driver earnings less consistent. GeekWire noted that transportation-network driver pay regulations are enforced at the state level.

The two sides therefore offer different explanations for the conditions drivers described. Drivers Union points to driver growth, trip growth, and rising deadheading as evidence of oversupply. Uber challenges the representativeness of the sample and points to higher regulated fares and reduced demand. The reporting cited here does not settle that methodological dispute or independently establish either account as the cause of earnings or traffic outcomes.

For drivers, the union’s concern is that more drivers competing for trips, together with more unpaid driving between passengers, can put pressure on paid work and earnings. For riders and the wider city, the union argues that empty miles add congestion and air pollution. These are the organizers’ stated concerns; the reported findings do not quantify a specific earnings loss or independently measure the protest’s claimed effects on traffic or air quality.
