In a Seattle-area personnel roundup published October 18, 2024, GeekWire reported three executive moves across consumer business, biotech and artificial intelligence: Tressie Lieberman joined Starbucks as executive vice president and global chief brand officer, Shape Therapeutics co-founder Francois Vigneault stepped down as CEO, and Read AI added operations and recruiting leaders. These are historical announcements, not confirmation of the executives’ roles today.
Tressie Lieberman takes a broad brand role at Starbucks
Lieberman joined Starbucks as executive vice president and global chief brand officer after about a year as Yahoo’s chief marketing officer. Based in Seattle, she was to report to Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol. Her remit covered marketing, product, digital, creative, data analytics and insights—a scope that reaches beyond advertising into the broader customer experience.
Lieberman brought experience from Chipotle, Snap Kitchen, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. She had previously worked with Niccol at Chipotle, where she was vice president of digital marketing and off-premise. Her appointment therefore combined restaurant-industry experience with digital and consumer-brand leadership.
The move came as Niccol sought to reposition Starbucks amid weak sales and renewed emphasis on the company’s handcrafted, premium-coffee identity. The breadth of Lieberman’s responsibilities suggests a brand effort connected to products and digital interactions as well as marketing; the announcement does not establish that the appointment would improve sales.

Other Starbucks organizational changes
Starbucks also announced changes to its reporting structure. North America President Sara Trilling took on additional direct reports related to store concepts, design and development. Global Communications and Corporate Affairs were combined under Dominic Carr. AJ Jones II continued to lead Corporate Affairs while reporting to Carr.
Shape Therapeutics names an interim CEO
Francois Vigneault stepped down as CEO of Shape Therapeutics, the Seattle biotech startup he co-founded in 2018. Chief Scientific Officer David Huss became interim CEO while the company searched for a permanent successor. Vigneault said he wanted to return to building early-stage technology and pursue new challenges across industries.

Shape works on RNA editing and gene therapies. RNA carries instructions cells use to make proteins; RNA-editing approaches aim to alter those instructions without necessarily changing the underlying DNA. The field is distinct from a guarantee of a particular treatment or outcome: the announcement describes the company’s research area, not a proven therapy.
In 2021, Shape announced a partnership with Roche for gene-therapy work related to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. GeekWire described the agreement as potentially worth more than $3 billion. That figure is a potential deal value, not evidence that Shape received $3 billion upfront or in total.

The report did not explain why Vigneault left beyond his stated desire to pursue new challenges. It did not establish that the departure followed financial trouble, scientific setbacks, a board dispute or an acquisition, nor did it say Huss would become permanent CEO.
Read AI adds operations and recruiting leaders
Seattle-based Read AI hired Kate Reinmiller as vice president of operations and Karin Rodriguez as principal recruiter. CEO and co-founder David Shim described the additions as coming during a “step-up function” in the company’s growth, without providing a growth rate, hiring target or financial milestone.
Rank #4
Reinmiller had held leadership roles at MOGL, Boltive and Mixpo. Rodriguez’s previous employers included The UpGroup, Stanley, GoDaddy, Wyze Labs and Glowforge. The roles point to two different scaling needs: strengthening day-to-day execution and increasing recruiting capacity. They do not, by themselves, establish a specific headcount plan or revenue trajectory.
At the time of the report, Read AI’s product generated meeting summaries, including topics, action items and questions, and offered video playback of AI-generated highlights. This is a description of the product as reported in October 2024, not a statement of its current feature set.

What the three moves say about Seattle’s business mix
Together, the announcements show how executive changes in the Seattle-area ecosystem span very different kinds of organizations: a global coffee retailer working on brand and customer experience, a biotech company navigating founder succession, and an AI startup adding operational and talent capacity. The shared local connection does not make their business circumstances alike, and the reported appointments alone do not establish their eventual impact.
