Arrow Electronics announced in May 2000 that president and chief operating officer Francis M. Scricco would become CEO on July 1. Stephen P. Kaufman would leave the CEO role but remain chairman, according to a contemporary EE Times report published May 10, 2000. This is a historical succession, not a description of Arrow’s current leadership.

When did Fran Scricco become Arrow’s CEO?

The announcement was reported on May 10, 2000, and set July 1, 2000, as the effective date. Scricco, then Arrow’s president and COO, was named to succeed Kaufman as CEO.

Did Stephen Kaufman leave Arrow?

No. Kaufman was to step down as CEO while continuing as chairman. The change separated the company’s chief executive role from its chairmanship; it was not described as his departure from Arrow.

Why was Scricco selected?

The EE Times account linked the appointment to Scricco’s strategic and operational work at Arrow. Kaufman said Scricco had been integral to designing and executing the company’s strategy for the previous three years, and praised his leadership of a North American realignment toward a customer-focused structure.

The report also credited Scricco with a key role in restructuring and integrating several acquisitions. It did not identify those acquired companies in the available account.

What were their backgrounds at the time?

Francis M. Scricco

Scricco was reported as 51 and had joined Arrow in 1997 from Fisher Scientific International, where he had been a group president. His earlier experience included General Electric and Boston Consulting Group.

Stephen P. Kaufman

Kaufman was reported as 58 and had joined Arrow 18 years earlier as president of its electronics distribution business. He became company president and COO in 1985, CEO in 1986, and chairman in 1994. The report said he had served as CEO for 14 years.

After the succession, Kaufman said he wanted to focus on broad strategic issues, including Internet activities, acquisitions, and industry relations.

How large was Arrow at the time?

The 2000 report described Arrow as a $9 billion distributor. That is a contemporaneous characterization from the article, not a current revenue figure.
