In his 2019 PerthNow article, Pape recommends gathering key documents, storing them securely and writing a final letter. It is a practical organizing aid—not a substitute for a valid will, formal appointments or legal advice.
What Scott Pape means by a Fearless Folder
Pape introduced the Fearless Folder in a 1 January 2019 PerthNow opinion article as an advance-preparation exercise for families. The article was an excerpt from his book The Barefoot Investor for Families: How to Teach Your Kids the Value of a Buck, published by HarperCollins Publishers Australia in 2018. The catalog record lists 272 pages and ISBN 9781460756874 (Google Books listing).
The folder’s purpose is to make practical details easier to locate when relatives are grieving: who to contact, where documents are, and which accounts or instructions need attention. Pape captures the personal motive this way: “I can’t control when I die, but the one thing I can control is having everything sorted and prepared for my family.”
Three steps in Pape’s 2019 article
- Collect important documents. Bring together the records and instructions a trusted person may need, rather than leaving them scattered across drawers, inboxes and online accounts.
- Store them securely. Pape’s article suggests a fireproof and waterproof safe. The aim is to keep important papers protected and their location known to the person who may need them.
- Write a last letter. Include a personal message for family members. It is distinct from legal documents and can communicate things that paperwork cannot.
What information to gather
Pape’s 2019 example ranges from formal documents to practical account details. It is an illustration of his approach, not a universally complete legal checklist.

- A will and power-of-attorney documents.
- A net-worth statement and information about bank accounts, investments and insurance policies.
- Login information and instructions for social-media accounts.
- Organ-donation preferences and funeral instructions.
- A final message to family.
His current Fearless Folder guidance also lists superannuation binding nominations alongside a will, powers of attorney, bank and investment information, login details, funeral instructions and a final message. Pape notes that a will does not cover superannuation. The legal effect of documents and nominations depends on the relevant rules and circumstances, so do not treat a folder list as a determination of what applies to you.
Make the folder usable, not just complete
A folder only helps if the right person can find it and understand what to do with it. Pape’s current guidance suggests keeping original documents in a bolted safe, storing scans in a dedicated estate email protected with two-factor authentication through an app rather than SMS, and telling the executor where everything is. These are his recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular storage method is risk-free.

Choose physical, digital or combined storage around four practical questions:
- Access: Can the executor or other trusted helper locate the materials and obtain lawful access when needed?
- Originals: Are important original documents protected and distinguishable from scans?
- Security: Are account credentials and sensitive records protected from people who should not see them?
- Maintenance: Will someone update the information when accounts, contacts, documents or instructions change?
Record the location and access instructions separately from the sensitive contents where appropriate. Review the folder after major life or financial changes, and make sure a trusted person knows how to find the current version.

What the folder cannot do
Organizing papers does not itself make a will valid, appoint someone to act for you, or ensure that a financial institution will accept an instruction. A folder is a guide to information; the underlying legal documents and account arrangements still matter. Pape’s current site recommends discussing a will with a lawyer rather than relying on a will kit. Because legal requirements vary by jurisdiction and personal circumstances, use qualified local advice for estate-planning decisions.
