Digital twins are changing European manufacturing where live operational data improves a specific decision—such as preventing a machine failure, reducing scrap or managing energy—not merely where a factory has a 3D model. Scott Dylan’s investment thesis is plausible, particularly for specialised industrial software, but his article is commentary rather than proof that Europe leads the market or that every factory will achieve the same returns.
What Scott Dylan is arguing
In his March 13, 2026 article, Scott Dylan presents digital twins as a meeting point for industrial artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, simulation, energy management and European manufacturing expertise. He argues that cheaper sensors, cloud computing and AI-enabled modelling are making the technology more accessible, and that predictive maintenance is the most mature entry point.
His investment view is that vertically specialised companies—those combining industrial data, domain expertise and software—could build stronger competitive positions than generic platforms. He also argues that a supplier can start with one use case and expand across a customer’s plant. Those are investment propositions, not independently measured market results. The available coverage does not verify specific NexaTech Ventures portfolio deployments, customer outcomes or investment performance; Dylan’s author profile is available at TechBullion, while a secondary company profile appears at CB Insights.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: digital twins are becoming useful infrastructure for selected manufacturing decisions, and European industrial software businesses may be well positioned. Comparative claims that Europe is already leading, or that specialised companies will become the continent’s most valuable industrial technology firms, remain forecasts.

What a manufacturing digital twin actually is
There is no single definition accepted across every standards community. A practical test is to ask what physical system is represented, what data updates it, what decision it improves and how quickly it reflects reality.
Related concepts
- Digital model: A representation of an asset or process that may be static and disconnected from live operations.
- Digital shadow: Data flows from the physical system to the digital representation, generally without automated feedback to the equipment.
- Digital twin: A connected representation updated by the physical system and used for monitoring, analysis, simulation, optimisation or controlled intervention.
- 3D visualisation: A visual layer that can help with spatial context or training but is not, by itself, a twin.
- Simulation model: A model for testing scenarios that may never receive live plant data.
- Digital thread: The connected flow of product and process information across design, production, service and supply-chain stages.
A live time-series model linked to a maintenance workflow can be valuable without sophisticated graphics. Conversely, a photorealistic factory walkthrough may have little operational value if it is not connected to reliable data or an actionable decision.
What the architecture contains
An industrial twin normally combines several layers rather than one boxed product. A typical stack includes:
- Physical systems: Machines, robots, sensors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), SCADA, historians, manufacturing-execution systems (MES), enterprise-resource-planning (ERP) and quality systems.
- Connectivity: Industrial protocols such as OPC UA and MQTT, application programming interfaces and vendor connectors.
- Data services: Ingestion, normalisation, identity management, storage and time-series processing.
- Asset models: Hierarchies and relationships among machines, lines, materials, people, products and orders.
- Analytical models: Physics-based, statistical, machine-learning or hybrid models.
- Applications: Dashboards, alerts, simulations, optimisation tools and integrations with maintenance or planning workflows.
- Controls and people: Human approval, safety procedures, cybersecurity and operational ownership.
AWS’s industrial reference architecture illustrates one pattern: OPC UA data from PLCs, SCADA, historians or I/O servers feeds asset models, a twin graph and visualisation or operational applications. It is guidance, not a universal blueprint.

Where digital twins can create manufacturing value
Predictive and condition-based maintenance
Vibration, temperature, pressure, current and energy patterns can reveal abnormal behaviour. A model may help estimate remaining useful life or replace calendar-based servicing with condition-based work. Results depend on the asset, failure mode, sensor quality, operating variability, historical failure records and the maintenance team’s response. “Weeks-ahead” warnings are not a universal capability, and excessive false alarms quickly destroy trust.
Process optimisation
Teams can test speeds, feed rates, temperatures, cycle times and sequencing before changing a live line. The objective might be throughput, yield, energy per unit or changeover time. A model is useful only when its assumptions match real operating constraints.
Quality control and traceability
Linking process conditions with defects can expose drift before output falls outside specification. A twin can connect a defect to a machine, batch, tool, shift or environmental condition and support root-cause analysis. It does not replace measurement discipline or a validated quality system.
Energy and emissions management
Metering and production context can attribute energy use to machines, lines, products, batches or orders. Operators can identify abnormal consumption and test lower-energy settings. A twin can support decarbonisation work, but it does not automatically produce auditable emissions data: boundaries, allocation methods, data lineage and reporting controls still matter.

Planning and scheduling
Capacity and constraint models can test order sequences and the effect of downtime, labour shortages, material delays or demand changes across sites.
Product and production engineering
Virtual manufacturability checks can reduce physical prototypes, validate assembly steps and expose commissioning problems before tooling or line installation. These engineering twins often require deeper CAD, product-lifecycle and simulation integration than a maintenance pilot.
Safety and training
Spatial models can help test traffic flows, hazardous areas, maintenance scenarios and emergency procedures, or provide simulated training. They should not be treated as a substitute for formal safety validation.
Why Europe is a credible opportunity
The European Commission identifies advanced manufacturing, IoT, robotics, additive manufacturing and digital or virtual twins as strategic capabilities. Its advanced-manufacturing overview and research and innovation material associate smart factories with real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, efficiency and reduced downtime.

Europe has a large installed base of complex equipment, strong automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, machinery, food and energy-equipment sectors, and extensive engineering and systems-integration expertise. Specialist small and medium-sized enterprises, pressure to cut energy use and the need for resilient, traceable production add to the opportunity.
That supports “well positioned” rather than an unqualified claim that Europe leads the United States or Asia. Reliable comparative adoption data is needed before making that conclusion.
Data rules, cloud power and governance
The EU Data Act began applying on September 12, 2025. The European Commission says it is intended to improve access to data generated by connected products and services and enable services using equipment from different manufacturers (Commission explanation). For twins, machine-data access, portability and contractual rights may determine whether an owner can change suppliers or combine equipment from multiple OEMs.
Trade secrets, cybersecurity, personal data and operational confidentiality remain separate concerns. A twin can support sustainability reporting or traceability, but it is not a legal shortcut for CSRD compliance.

Cloud concentration is another strategic issue. In June 2026, the Commission said AWS and Azure were under preliminary consideration for designation as cloud gatekeepers under the Digital Markets Act because of their entrenched market positions (Commission announcement; DMA page). Buyers should therefore negotiate export rights, region controls and exit plans at the start.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What buyers should measure
Build the business case from a baseline rather than a vendor’s headline percentage:
- Unplanned downtime and maintenance cost per asset.
- Scrap, rework and first-pass yield.
- Energy per unit, batch or order.
- Changeover duration and schedule adherence.
- Implementation, integration, sensor, cloud and training costs.
- Ongoing model calibration, cybersecurity and support costs.
- Payback period and the value of operator time.
Dylan’s article mentions energy savings of 10–15% and a production line worth £50,000 per hour. The available evidence supplies no study design, sample, sector, baseline or implementation conditions for those figures, so they should not be treated as general benchmarks.
Platform choices and trade-offs
| Approach | Useful when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud-first | Fast deployment and scalable compute | Recurring cost, connectivity and data-sovereignty concerns |
| Edge-first | Low latency or unreliable connectivity | More hardware and lifecycle management |
| Generic platform | Multiple sites and broad reuse | More integration and domain modelling |
| Vertical specialist | Known process and rapid use-case fit | Narrower scope or vendor dependence |
| 3D-heavy twin | Spatial planning, robotics or training | Risk of spending on visuals instead of data and workflow |
| Physics-based model | Known engineering relationships | Expensive development and maintenance |
| Machine-learning model | Complex patterns in good historical data | Drift, explainability and data-quality requirements |
Potential products to investigate include AWS IoT TwinMaker, which is a framework rather than a turnkey factory application; Microsoft Azure Digital Twins; Siemens Xcelerator and Industrial Operations X; Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE; PTC ThingWorx; and NVIDIA Omniverse. The right choice depends on existing OT/IT systems, latency, deployment model and use case.
Recommended Free Tools
AWS gives illustrative TwinMaker examples of about $197.53 or $220 per month for a small-factory scenario, and about $649.74 or $650 per month for a larger example under specified plans in US East (N. Virginia). Those figures exclude much of a real project—instrumentation, integration, SiteWise, storage, Grafana, engineering and support—and are not total deployment budgets. See AWS pricing and its pricing-plan API details.
How to run a credible pilot
- Define the decision: Choose downtime, energy, scrap, changeover, commissioning, scheduling or traceability—not a visualisation project.
- Select a bounded asset or line: Pick a repeatable, costly problem with an operational owner, baseline and available data.
- Audit the data: Check calibration, timestamps, missing intervals, asset IDs, machine-state labels, maintenance history, production-order links, access rights and network controls.
- Build the minimum viable twin: Start with hierarchy, telemetry, historical trends, alarms, production context and one model. 3D is optional.
- Validate in shadow mode: Back-test history, review alerts with maintenance staff and track false positives and false negatives by product, shift and operating regime.
- Connect the workflow: Each alert needs the asset, likely cause, severity, confidence, lead time, recommended action and a route into CMMS, MES, ERP or planning tools.
- Scale cautiously: Standardise naming, asset models, data contracts, cybersecurity, ownership, model monitoring and cost allocation before adding plants.
Common failure modes
- Bad data: Broken sensors, inconsistent tags and missing timestamps cannot be fixed by a dashboard.
- Model drift: New materials, tooling, software, operators or production mixes can invalidate an initially successful model.
- Alert fatigue: Unactionable alarms cause operators to ignore the system.
- No clear owner: Projects decay when production, engineering, maintenance and IT each assume another team is responsible.
- OT/IT mismatch: Plant-network restrictions, safety procedures and maintenance workflows can defeat a technically sound cloud deployment.
- Insufficient failure history: Rare or poorly recorded failures make predictive maintenance difficult.
- Unsafe automation: A twin should not override safety systems or control machinery without formal validation and fail-safe design.
- Lock-in and sensitive data: Proprietary models and production information require export rights, access controls and contractual safeguards.
Verdict
Digital twins are neither a universal cure nor empty marketing. They earn their cost when trustworthy plant data is connected to a high-value decision and people can act on the result. Scott Dylan is on firmer ground arguing for specialised, domain-aware industrial software than claiming that Europe is already the unquestioned leader or that headline savings are typical. For manufacturers and investors, the decisive questions are operational: which asset or process matters, what evidence exists, who owns the response, and can the model remain accurate and portable as the factory changes?
