Adobe Commerce is combining semantic search, behavior-aware recommendations, composable storefronts, cloud services, unified customer data and stronger B2B workflows. These capabilities can reduce shopping friction, but they are not automatically available to every Magento installation—and they require accurate catalog data, reliable event tracking and suitable architecture.
“Magento” remains common shorthand. Magento Open Source is the free, self-managed edition, while Adobe Commerce is Adobe’s commercial platform with additional B2B, cloud, merchandising and service capabilities. Feature availability varies by edition, release, deployment model and license; Adobe’s comparison is documented at Adobe Commerce feature availability.
The trends changing Adobe Commerce shopping experiences
| Trend | Shopper benefit | Main prerequisite |
|---|---|---|
| AI and semantic search | More relevant discovery and faster filtering | Clean attributes, taxonomy and event data |
| AI recommendations | Useful complementary-product discovery | Behavioral data, inventory controls and testing |
| Headless GraphQL storefronts | Flexible experiences across channels | Frontend engineering, analytics and observability |
| Edge Delivery Services | Faster content iteration and potentially faster delivery | A supported modern storefront architecture |
| Cloud Service and Commerce Optimizer | Managed operations and newer merchandising services | Migration, synchronization and compatibility planning |
| Unified customer data | More consistent cross-channel personalization | Consent, identity resolution and event collection |
| B2B self-service | Account-specific purchasing with fewer offline steps | ERP, pricing and workflow integration |
| Agentic commerce | Conversational and automated buying journeys | Reliable APIs, authorization and governance |
AI-powered search is becoming the primary discovery layer
Adobe Live Search replaces standard Adobe Commerce search with a search field, product-listing-page widget, filtering, dynamic faceting and behavior-based re-ranking. Details are in Adobe’s Live Search documentation.
From keywords to intent
Keyword search depends mainly on text matches. Semantic search attempts to interpret meaning, while behavior-aware ranking uses clicks, views and other interactions. For example, “formal summer wedding shoes” or a B2B query describing an application and dimensions can be more useful than an exact product-title phrase. Merchandising rules still let a retailer influence algorithmic results.
#1 Best Overall
Adobe documented semantic-search changes on June 8, 2026. The documentation describes semantic search as default-on for Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service and requiring manual enablement for PaaS deployments, with initial English-catalog limitations. Check the current guidance at Adobe Commerce user documentation.
What has to be right first
- Product names, attributes, categories, synonyms and measurements must be consistent.
- Headless storefronts must send the required storefront events; Adobe explains this architecture at Storefront Services architecture.
- Search should be judged by zero-result rate, refinement rate, add-to-cart rate, conversion rate and revenue per search—not by the presence of an AI label.
Semantic search cannot repair missing attributes. A poorly governed catalog can produce confidently irrelevant results, and unsupported languages may perform differently.
Recommendations are becoming contextual merchandising
Adobe Product Recommendations uses catalog and behavioral data for units such as “customers who bought this also bought,” most-viewed, similar products, cross-sells and upsells. In a headless implementation, a PWA Studio or custom React/Vue frontend sends events and retrieves recommendation units through GraphQL; see the headless integration guide.
Recommendations can help shoppers discover complementary items at product, cart and category decision points. They do not guarantee higher conversion or average order value. Results depend on traffic volume, product relationships, placement, margins, availability and the objective selected. New products and low-traffic stores face cold-start limitations.
Measure incremental value
Test each placement against a control group. Track incremental revenue, product discovery, basket composition and availability—not just clicks. Suppress discontinued or unavailable items and avoid repeatedly showing products a customer already rejected or purchased.

Headless and composable commerce change storefront design
Adobe exposes separate GraphQL schemas for core Commerce, B2B, Catalog Service, Live Search and Recommendations, as described in the GraphQL documentation and Storefront Services schemas. A decoupled frontend can serve websites, apps, marketplaces, kiosks and multiple brands from shared commerce services.
Potential advantages
- Frontend teams can experiment without rewriting transaction logic.
- Different B2C, B2B, regional and brand experiences can share a backend.
- Interaction design, caching and channel reuse can be tailored to the business.
Costs and failure modes
- Teams own more JavaScript, deployment, accessibility, SEO, caching and analytics work.
- Broken event instrumentation deprives search and recommendation services of learning signals.
- Legacy extensions may assume Luma or a traditional theme.
- API latency or excessive JavaScript can make a headless page slower than a well-optimized theme.
Headless is an architectural option, not a speed guarantee. Measure Core Web Vitals, server response, JavaScript execution and real-user interaction before and after a change.
Edge Delivery Services, Cloud Service and Commerce Optimizer
Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service is a multi-tenant SaaS platform with Adobe-managed infrastructure, automatic feature and security updates and integration with Adobe Experience Cloud. Its current storefront model is fully headless and does not support the legacy Luma storefront; details are in Adobe’s Cloud Service overview.
Edge Delivery Services adds document-based authoring, visual editing and Storefront Builder. It can let marketing teams publish campaigns faster and may improve delivery when caching, images, scripts and edge configuration are implemented well. It does not establish a universal performance result without a defined device, geography, implementation and measurement method.
Commerce Optimizer is a storefront, catalog and merchandising layer that can be paired with an existing transaction engine. Adobe documents current pricing and packaging at Adobe Commerce pricing. It can support gradual modernization, but catalog, pricing, inventory and promotion synchronization must remain accurate.
Migration is more than hosting
Moving from Adobe Commerce on Cloud or on-premises to Cloud Service may require replacing Luma-dependent extensions, rebuilding frontend customizations, retesting ERP and PIM integrations and changing data flows. Adobe’s lifecycle guidance identifies Cloud Service as a long-term destination for applicable Adobe Commerce on Cloud customers, but that is not a universal recommendation for every Magento Open Source store: lifecycle policy.
Unified data enables, but does not guarantee, personalization
Commerce events such as searches, views, cart actions and purchases can flow into Adobe Experience Platform, Real-Time CDP and Journey Optimizer, creating continuity between onsite experiences, audiences and campaigns. Event collection and service configuration are prerequisites; see Adobe’s Commerce guidance.

Governance questions
- What consent is required in each market, and how can customers opt out?
- Which events are collected, for how long and under what identity?
- How are duplicate or incorrectly resolved profiles corrected?
- Can merchandisers explain or override a recommendation?
Over-personalization can narrow discovery or feel intrusive. Incomplete or biased data can also make the experience less relevant.
B2B buying is becoming account-aware self-service
Adobe Commerce supports company accounts, customer-specific pricing, quotes, approval workflows, requisition lists, purchase orders, payment on credit and sales assistance. A B2B buyer may care less about novelty than whether the correct contract price appears after login, permissions are enforced, stock and lead times are trustworthy and a known configuration can be reordered quickly.
Integration determines the experience
ERP, PIM, inventory and customer-account synchronization must support pricing rules, credit terms, approval states and fulfillment promises. Treating B2B as ordinary B2C personalization misses the commercial logic that makes self-service useful.

Payments and channels add convenience—and operational risk
Adobe Payment Services supports multiple payment methods and, where available, installment options, with consolidated payment, order and invoice visibility. Availability, eligibility, fees, settlement, fraud controls and regulation vary by market and account; verify them before promising a method.

Agentic commerce is an emerging frontier
Adobe’s June 2026 developer article describes agents that can answer objections, select or bundle products and streamline checkout through machine-readable product, price, promotion, availability and cart interfaces, including standardized interfaces such as MCP: Adobe’s agentic-commerce architecture article.
This is a strategic direction, not a universally mature, turnkey Adobe Commerce feature. Merchants preparing now should expose accurate APIs while enforcing authentication, authorization, audit trails and human-readable disclosures. Risks include stale inventory, incorrect specifications, unauthorized discounts, unsuitable advice and unclear responsibility when an agent makes a mistake.
Which trend should a merchant adopt first?
Start with search when
Your catalog is large or attribute-rich, search has a high zero-result rate, shoppers use synonyms and reliable event collection is possible.

Best Value
Start with recommendations when
You have sufficient traffic, clear product relationships and a measurable cross-sell or discovery objective.
Consider headless when
Multiple channels need shared services, the current frontend blocks experimentation and the organization can support GraphQL, event tracking, QA and observability.
Prefer a modern theme when
The existing storefront is stable, engineering capacity is limited or extension compatibility makes a full headless migration risky. Hyvä positions its products as lighter alternatives for Magento Open Source, Mage-OS and Adobe Commerce; published prices are vendor prices and can change. See Hyvä Commerce and Hyvä Enterprise.
Evaluate Cloud Service when
Managed infrastructure, Adobe Experience Cloud integration, complex B2B operations or multi-brand and multi-region needs justify a storefront and integration migration.
Keep Magento Open Source when
You need source and hosting control, can operate security and upgrades and do not require Adobe’s commercial SaaS merchandising services.
Quick Recap
A practical modernization roadmap
- Audit catalog attributes, taxonomy, synonyms, inventory and pricing accuracy.
- Measure search zero-result, refinement, add-to-cart and revenue-per-search performance.
- Implement consent-aware storefront event collection and validate it after every frontend release.
- Improve search relevance and test semantic search where the deployment and language are supported.
- Run controlled recommendation experiments with availability and cold-start safeguards.
- Compare an optimized theme, Hyvä, Adobe’s storefront and a custom headless build against real performance and extension requirements.
- Assess Cloud Service or Commerce Optimizer only after mapping data synchronization, migration and rollback plans.
- Connect customer data deliberately, with identity, retention and opt-out governance.
- Pilot assisted or agentic interactions in a narrow, auditable workflow before allowing automated cart or discount actions.
- Review incremental customer and financial outcomes quarterly rather than assuming a platform capability created them.
