Savings Account Rates on September 25, 2024: National Average and High-Yield Offers

The FDIC’s September 2024 national savings-rate observation was 0.46%, while a September 25 roundup reported selected offers up to 5.50% APY. Both are historical figures, and they measure different things.

Historical snapshot: On September 25, 2024, the FDIC’s national savings-rate observation was 0.46%, while a dated roundup reported selected high-yield offers as high as 5.50% APY with a $1,000 minimum. These figures describe different things: a monthly national average and selected advertised offers. They are historical, not current offers or a 2026 comparison.

What were savings account rates on September 25, 2024?

The FDIC’s September 2024 National Rate: Savings observation was 0.46%. It is a monthly weighted average across institutions for which data was available, not the highest rate a consumer could find. The series is reported through FRED, and the FDIC explains its national-rate methodology here.

A September 25 roundup by AOL Finance reported selected high-yield savings offers reaching 5.50% APY with a $1,000 minimum, and up to 5.33% APY at some providers without a stated minimum. Those are reported offers in a secondary roundup, not a verified, comprehensive census of all accounts available nationwide. The roundup’s URL currently returns an error, so the figures should be read as dated reported rates, not as independently confirmed terms for any particular provider.

Figure What it represents Qualification
0.46% FDIC National Rate: Savings September 2024 monthly weighted national average; not a best-offer rate.
Up to 5.50% APY Selected high-yield savings offer reported by AOL Finance September 25, 2024 roundup; $1,000 minimum stated; secondary reporting, not a nationwide official ranking.
Up to 5.33% APY Selected offers reported by AOL Finance September 25, 2024 roundup; some providers had no minimum stated in the roundup; secondary reporting.

What was the highest savings account APY?

The highest figure in the September 25 roundup was 5.50% APY with a $1,000 minimum. It should not be read as a universal rate: qualifying balance, fees, location, membership, and other account terms can affect whether an advertised offer is accessible or worthwhile. The roundup also reported rates up to 5.33% APY from some providers without a stated minimum, but it did not establish a complete primary-source ranking of individual banks.

Other dated examples show why the headline number needs context. MacRumors reported that Apple Card Savings had reduced its APY from 4.40% to 4.25% by September 25, 2024 (report). Downeast Credit Union disclosed a 3.50% APY tier for balances of $500,000 or more on its high-yield money market. That account is not a standard broadly available savings benchmark: its disclosure says rates are variable, a $2,500 minimum balance is generally required to open and earn APY, fees may reduce earnings, and membership is geographically limited to Maine-area eligibility (rate disclosure).

Did savings rates drop after the Fed rate cut?

On September 18, 2024, the Federal Open Market Committee lowered its target range for the federal funds rate by 0.50 percentage point, to 4.75%–5.00%. The Committee’s statement said it decided to lower the range “in light of the progress on inflation and the balance of risks” (Federal Reserve statement).

That rate cut is policy context, not an announcement of consumer savings-account APYs. The New York Fed describes the effective federal funds rate (EFFR) as a volume-weighted median of overnight federal-funds transactions; the FOMC establishes the target rate or range (New York Fed explanation). Individual banks and credit unions set their own deposit rates, so the Fed move alone does not show whether a particular account’s APY changed on September 18 or by how much.

Why do the national average and advertised rates differ?

The 0.46% FDIC figure averages rates across institutions; a high-yield offer is a rate advertised by a specific provider subject to its account terms. They are not competing measurements of the same thing. A national average can sit far below selected offers, and a high advertised APY may depend on conditions that exclude some savers or apply only to a limited balance tier.

Other market rates should not be folded into a savings-account comparison. For example, Treasury bill rates are yields on government securities, not bank savings-account APYs. The Treasury’s table for September 25, 2024 is a separate benchmark (daily Treasury bill rates).

What should you compare when evaluating a savings account?

A headline APY does not tell you whether you qualify or what you will earn on your balance. Check the account disclosure for:

  • Rate type: whether the APY is variable and may change.
  • Opening and earning thresholds: minimum deposit to open and minimum balance needed to earn the advertised APY.
  • Fees: monthly charges and any conditions to waive them, since fees can reduce earnings.
  • Eligibility: geographic restrictions, credit-union membership rules, or other qualifications.
  • Access terms: deposit, withdrawal, and transfer methods and any applicable limits.
  • Institution and insurance: verify the institution and the applicable deposit-insurance coverage for the account.

Dated disclosures illustrate how much terms can vary. Frontwave Credit Union’s rate sheet effective September 25, 2024 said a $5 minimum balance was required to earn dividends on its Dividend Plus Checking and Share Savings accounts and warned that rates could change without notice (rate sheet). That sheet describes one institution’s products; it does not establish the national best rate.
