The $12.97 Windows 11 Home and Pro offer advertised by Neowin in February 2026 was a historical deal, not a confirmed current price. Neowin’s page compared the Pro price with $199, making the maximum discount about 93%; Home’s comparison with $139 works out to about 91%. The offer was sold through Neowin Deals, operated by StackCommerce—not directly by Microsoft. Check the checkout page for today’s price and terms before paying.
What the deal advertised
Neowin published the promotion on February 12, 2026, describing digital Windows 11 Home or Pro licenses at $12.97. The article listed reference prices of $139 for Home and $199 for Pro. Those are the comparison prices stated in that deal article, not a confirmation of Microsoft’s current prices. Read Neowin’s original deal listing.
| Edition | Historical deal price | Reference price in Neowin’s article | Calculated discount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Home | $12.97 | $139 | About 90.7% |
| Windows 11 Pro | $12.97 | $199 | About 93.5% |
The “up to 93%” claim is plausible for Pro: ($199 − $12.97) ÷ $199 × 100 is about 93.5%. It does not mean Home is discounted by the same percentage.
The original article described a digital code for one device, with lifetime access and updates included, and said buyers had to redeem it within 30 days. It also said the offer was available worldwide. These are the seller’s stated terms from February; confirm the edition, device limit, redemption deadline, regional availability, final price, taxes, and refund policy on the checkout page. Neowin disclosed an affiliate relationship.

Is the offer still available?
The exact $12.97 promotion dates to February 12, 2026, so it should not be treated as a live offer without checking checkout. Neowin’s linked Home and Pro pages are the Home listing and the Pro listing. Their current prices and terms are not confirmed here. Later Neowin promotions indicate that similar offers appeared with changing prices; they do not establish that this original deal remains available. What you are—and are not—buying
This is an offer for a Windows product key or digital license, not a new computer, installation service, USB installer, Microsoft 365 subscription, or Microsoft Office license. Neowin’s article said the key could activate Windows running in Parallels, but that does not license Office included with Parallels Pro; Office requires its own license.
The seller called it a lifetime, one-device digital license. The public deal article does not establish whether the key is retail, OEM, volume, or another license channel, or confirm its transfer rights, intended commercial use, regional restrictions, or whether Microsoft provides direct support. A successful activation alone does not answer those licensing questions. Review the seller’s license terms and refund policy before purchase, especially if you may replace the PC or use Windows for business-critical work.

Choose Home or Pro by the features you need
| Edition | Typical fit | Reasons to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Personal PCs, students, and gaming systems | Choose it if you do not need the additional management and virtualization capabilities associated with Pro. |
| Pro | Work or specialized setups | Consider it for features such as BitLocker management, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, Group Policy, domain or Microsoft Entra ID joining, Remote Desktop hosting, and kiosk or assigned-access functions. |
Pro is not automatically faster or more secure simply because it is the higher edition. If you are unsure, choose Home unless you can identify a Pro feature you actually need. Check the edition installed on your PC before buying: a key for one edition is not a substitute for a license to the other. For Microsoft’s current edition information, see its Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro pages.
Check whether you need a new license
A Windows 10 user should check both activation and hardware compatibility before spending money. An already activated Windows installation may have a digital entitlement that covers an ordinary upgrade; do not assume every Windows 10 PC needs a new key. Open Settings > System > Activation to check activation status.
Windows 11 also has hardware requirements that a product key cannot bypass. Microsoft lists requirements including a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, and DirectX 12-compatible graphics. Setup requirements can also include an internet connection and Microsoft account, depending on the scenario. Check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 specifications and PC Health Check guidance before upgrading. If the device is incompatible, a discounted key will not make it officially compatible.

Install Windows separately, then activate
The deal is for a digital code; do not assume it includes installation media or an installation service. Microsoft provides Windows installation media separately. Back up personal files before installing or changing operating systems.
- Confirm the PC meets Windows 11 requirements and that you have selected the correct edition.

- Once Windows is installed, open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Change product key, enter the code, and check that Windows reports it is activated.

- Check that the key matches the installed edition and re-enter it carefully, watching for mistyped or confused characters.
- Make sure the PC is online and, if the original offer’s deadline still applies, that the code was redeemed within the stated 30 days.
- Run the Windows Activation troubleshooter and check whether the key has already been used or blocked.
- Contact the seller for a code bought through the promotion. Keep the order number, invoice, email, and screenshots, and check the refund terms. Do not assume Microsoft Support will replace a third-party promotional key.
A one-device restriction may matter if you activate another computer or replace a motherboard. The deal article does not establish how those cases are handled, so check the seller’s terms before relying on transferability. If the code cannot be activated, request a remedy under the seller’s stated policy.

When the discount is worth the trade-off
The third-party offer may suit an individual who needs one activation, has a compatible PC, and is comfortable with the seller’s clearly stated license and refund terms. It is a less suitable choice if you need confirmed retail transfer rights, direct Microsoft support, predictable licensing for business use, or multiple-device deployment.
Buying from Microsoft costs more at the prices cited in Neowin’s February article, but provides a first-party purchase path and clearer provenance. Confirm current pricing on Microsoft’s Home or Pro page. If your PC fails Windows 11 requirements, consider whether hardware changes or a replacement PC make more financial sense than buying a key alone.
