PIF says Electronic Arts’ acquisition by a consortium including PIF closed on 4 August 2026. The domestic strategy’s headline figures—250 games companies, 39,000 jobs and SAR 50 billion in sector GDP contribution by 2030—are targets, not reported achievements.
Why is Saudi Arabia investing in EA and games?
PIF has described gaming, esports, entertainment and sports as strategic areas for long-term investment. The financial logic it presents is to participate in industries with global audiences and valuable intellectual property while supporting a wider games ecosystem. That is PIF’s stated rationale, not independent proof that any particular acquisition will deliver a return or create the promised domestic benefits.
On 29 September 2025, PIF announced that Electronic Arts had agreed to be acquired in an all-cash transaction by a consortium of PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, at an announced enterprise value of approximately $55 billion. The announcement’s projected closing timetable was superseded: PIF reported that the acquisition closed on 4 August 2026. The completion notice confirms the close but does not state a final transaction price. PIF’s completion notice and 2025 transaction announcement distinguish the completed deal from its original valuation and timetable.
PIF said it had been a minority investor in EA for more than five years before the acquisition. The deal should be described as an acquisition by the consortium, with PIF as one of its members—not as a purchase by Savvy Games Group alone.

What is Savvy Games Group?
Launched by PIF in 2022, Savvy is wholly owned by the fund and serves as a vehicle for global games and esports growth as well as Saudi ecosystem development. PIF framed its launch as part of economic diversification and Vision 2030. Savvy’s remit therefore connects international portfolio-building with the stated ambition to develop a domestic industry; those are related goals, but they are not the same measure of success.

At launch, PIF said Savvy had acquired ESL and FACEIT and combined them to form ESL FACEIT Group. This illustrates how a global acquisition can add operating capacity to the portfolio while supporting the esports part of Savvy’s strategy. PIF’s 2022 launch announcement sets out that initial remit.
How does the portfolio work?
Savvy’s portfolio is not made up solely of companies it owns outright. Its 2024 annual report separates wholly owned business units from a minority equity investment:

These ownership descriptions and the 8.1% stake are as reported in Savvy’s 2024 annual report; they should not be read as a list of companies directly owned by PIF itself. Savvy’s 2023 annual-report release also described its $4.9 billion acquisition of Scopely and its esports activity through ESL FACEIT Group. The $4.9 billion figure refers to the acquisition as reported by Savvy, not a current valuation of Scopely. What is Saudi Arabia’s esports and games strategy?
The domestic strategy is broader than buying established international companies. It aims to create Saudi-based businesses, jobs and economic output in games and esports. PIF’s 2024 release on Savvy’s first annual report gave these National Gaming and Esports Strategy targets for 2030:

PIF’s release says the strategy “aims to establish 250 games companies that will create 39,000 jobs, and raise the sector’s GDP contribution to SAR 50 billion by 2030.” The phrasing matters: these are ambitions published by the fund, not evidence that the outcomes have already occurred. PIF’s 2024 announcement gives the targets.
Savvy’s 2023 annual-report release reported more than 3,500 employees across 22 countries at that time. That is a company-reported workforce figure for Savvy’s operations, not a count of jobs created in Saudi Arabia and not a measure of progress against the 39,000-job national target.

What the investment figures do—and do not—show
The strategy combines different kinds of activity that should not be conflated:
- Global portfolio-building: PIF’s consortium participation in EA and Savvy’s acquisitions, operating businesses and equity investments.
- Domestic ecosystem-building: Savvy’s stated role in developing Saudi companies and the national strategy’s targets for firms, jobs and GDP contribution.
- Demonstrated outcomes: figures that would show whether the targets have been met or what economic returns the program has realized. The cited announcements do not establish those results.
Ownership also varies by transaction. Savvy reports several wholly owned units alongside its minority Embracer stake; EA was acquired by a consortium that includes PIF. These distinctions matter when assessing who owns a business, who invested, and whether an announced economic goal has been achieved.
