What happened to SAS’s Shanghai route?
SAS closed its Copenhagen–Shanghai route in November 2024. In a report published in April 2025, the airline said Shanghai had been its last route to China or Hong Kong. That means SAS no longer had a direct service on this route after the closure; it does not mean flights between Europe and China as a whole stopped.
SAS attributed the route’s reduced appeal in part to longer flying times after Russian airspace closed to its operations. The airline reported that Copenhagen–Shanghai airborne time increased 19% from 2019 to 2024, reaching 12 hours 6 minutes in 2024. In a release accompanying its report, SAS said routes such as Copenhagen–Shanghai could require “up to two extra hours of flight time each way.” These are SAS’s figures and explanation, not a general measure of every Europe–China flight. SAS’s April 2025 report and accompanying release provide the airline’s account.
What is known about LOT’s Beijing service?
AeroRoutes reported on February 7, 2025, that LOT removed planned three-times-weekly Warsaw–Beijing Capital flights from its schedule. They had been scheduled to resume on March 30, 2025, but the schedule displayed through the first quarter of 2026 did not include Beijing service. This documents a schedule change reported at that time, not LOT’s confirmed position on October 8, 2026. The available reporting does not establish an official reason for the removal or a return date. AeroRoutes’ schedule report describes the change.

LOT and its parent group issued a Beijing suspension notice in 2020 tied to the coronavirus outbreak, but that was a separate historical suspension and does not explain the later schedule removal. The 2020 LOT notice should not be treated as evidence of the later decision’s rationale. Passengers considering a trip should check LOT’s current booking and schedule information directly, since the schedule evidence available here does not settle present-day service.
Does this mean European airlines are giving up on China?
Not on the evidence of these two routes alone. SAS’s closure and LOT’s reported schedule removal are meaningful individual changes, but they do not establish a broader retreat by European carriers. Nor do they show that China’s international air links are generally shrinking.

For context, Shanghai’s municipal government reported an average of 772 daily international and regional flights at the city’s two airports for the March 29–October 24, 2026 schedule, up 1.8% year over year. That figure covers all international and regional services through Shanghai, not Europe–China flights specifically, so it cannot answer whether capacity on any particular European route rose or fell. The city also described new services by China Eastern and other carriers. Shanghai’s schedule announcement offers the broader city-level context.

Airlines weigh several factors when deciding whether to retain a route: how long and direct the flight is, expected passenger and cargo demand, frequency, aircraft deployment, and the season covered by a schedule. Longer routings can affect an airline’s operational choices and the appeal of a journey to passengers. In this case, however, the public explanation in the cited material is specific to SAS: it linked Copenhagen–Shanghai’s longer airborne time and reduced appeal to Russian airspace closures. The available LOT schedule report does not establish that the same factor drove its Beijing change.

What should travelers check before booking?
- Confirm the operating carrier and route. A city-pair search may show connections or another airline’s service rather than a nonstop flight operated by SAS or LOT.
- Check the dates, not just the route name. Airline schedules change by season, and the LOT reporting described a particular schedule period rather than confirmed availability in October 2026.
- Compare total journey time and connections. With a route no longer available nonstop from a particular carrier, a connecting itinerary may be an option, but its airports, layover, and overall duration will differ.
- Verify directly with the airline before relying on a return date. The available sources do not establish when LOT will resume Warsaw–Beijing service, if it does.
