Sarah Buchner says she began working with her father as a carpenter in rural Austria when she was 12. Decades later, after moving through construction management, earning advanced degrees and attending Stanford Graduate School of Business, she founded Trunk Tools, an enterprise software company using AI to help construction teams find and act on project information. The company’s $20 million Series A was announced on August 20, 2024—not a current funding round—and later company updates describe a much larger platform and a reported Series B.
What the $20 million raise was—and when it happened
Trunk Tools announced a $20 million Series A on August 20, 2024. Redpoint Ventures led the round, with participation from Innovation Endeavors. The company said the financing brought its total disclosed funding to $30 million, including a $10 million seed round. The money was intended to expand its suite of AI agents for construction. Trunk Tools’ funding announcement gives the round details.
That is the financing behind the headline. It is distinct from the $40 million Series B that Trunk Tools’ resource index reports as announced on July 24, 2025. If the two rounds are additive, the disclosed amounts imply $70 million raised across them; that is an arithmetic inference, not a separately confirmed cumulative total.
How Buchner went from carpentry to construction technology
Buchner’s account is not that she entered business at 12. She says she worked with her father in carpentry because she needed money. Her career then moved through general contracting and construction operations: she worked as a superintendent and project manager and became a group leader, according to TechCrunch’s 2024 profile. Trunk Tools says she earned a PhD in civil engineering and data science and founded the company in 2021; TechCrunch also described her Stanford Graduate School of Business experience.

That practical background matters to the company’s pitch. The product is aimed at the gap between information stored in project systems and the people who need it in the field. Trunk Tools’ founder biography says Buchner’s experience with construction-site inefficiency, including a fatality on one of her jobsites, informed her motivation. That is her stated context, not evidence that a particular software product would have prevented the incident.
The construction problem Trunk Tools is trying to address
Construction projects produce a mix of specifications, drawings, RFIs, submittals, change orders, contracts, schedules, safety procedures, inspection reports, meeting notes and spreadsheets. The operational challenge is not merely storing these records; it is finding the current, relevant answer quickly enough for the person doing the work.
A worker may need to leave the field to locate a specification or ask a project manager to search an email thread. Teams can miss revisions, spend time reconciling conflicting paperwork, or discover that information is incomplete only after work is delayed or must be redone. TechCrunch cited a survey in which roughly one-third of construction professionals said document access was challenging and one-quarter said inaccurate project paperwork had contributed to delays. Those figures describe the survey cited in that report, not every construction workforce.
One Trunk Tools launch example described a $500 million high-rise project with 3.6 million pages of documentation. That is a company-highlighted customer example, not a typical project-size benchmark. It illustrates the volume problem the company says it is tackling. The TrunkText launch announcement provides the example.

What Trunk Tools’ products do
TrunkText: ask project-specific questions
TrunkText was designed to let construction workers ask questions about a project’s documents through SMS, web or a mobile interface. The system searches indexed project materials and returns an answer with relevant source documents, according to the company’s product deep dive. In practical terms, a superintendent might ask where a requirement appears and receive a response pointing to supporting project material. The superintendent still needs to confirm that the cited material is current and applies to the work in question.
TrunkPerform: workforce incentives
TrunkPerform preceded TrunkText and addressed a different problem: workforce performance. The company describes it as using incentives and performance tools to help teams meet project goals. That is not document search or automatic paperwork review; it is an effort to connect worker motivation with project outcomes. The company’s launch history discusses the sequence.
Schedule Agent: connect information to planned work
Announced alongside the 2024 Series A, the Schedule Agent was designed to connect scheduled construction activities with relevant documents, so teams could surface potential issues and find information needed to carry out planned work. The announcement describes the intended workflow, not independently measured performance.
TrunkSubmittal and later products
Trunk Tools says TrunkSubmittal reviews submittals against project specifications and related RFIs, flagging missing, conflicting or potentially noncompliant information. The company currently advertises automatic review of 90% of submittals on its homepage; that is a company-reported product claim, and the page does not establish the test conditions or denominator needed to treat it as an independent benchmark.

Cortex and TrunkBrowse: a broader information layer
In its 2026 materials, Trunk Tools describes Cortex as a construction-specific intelligence layer and knowledge graph. TrunkBrowse is presented as a visual interface that connects objects on drawings with schedules, specifications, RFIs, submittals and other project information. The company’s TrunkBrowse page states general availability is expected in September 2026; as of August 18, 2026, that date is in the future.
The company has also characterized its direction as moving from a chat-based copilot toward a “system of action,” in which one agent can identify an issue and hand work to another agent to draft or advance a workflow. That is Trunk Tools’ description of its product ambition, not an independently established account of what the platform can reliably do across projects. Its 2026 company update describes this framing.
Why construction is a plausible market for AI
Construction combines document-heavy work, costly delays, a workforce often away from desks, and software spread across email, spreadsheets, paper records and specialized systems. This creates a case for tools that can make project knowledge easier to retrieve without asking crews to spend more time at a computer.
But construction AI has a harder job than searching ordinary text. A specification can be superseded by an RFI or change order. A drawing revision can change what an earlier note means. The relevant answer may depend on trade, location, elevation, schedule phase or contractual responsibility. Symbols and spatial relationships can matter as much as words. A general-purpose model may help with text retrieval, but that alone does not establish reliable interpretation of drawings or project context.

Buchner has argued that construction needs specialized tools and construction-specific data, including for drawings. That is the founder’s thesis, not a neutral scientific consensus. The company’s product advantage, if it proves durable, will need to come from more than a chatbot interface: reliable document ingestion, revision handling, integrations, field usability and domain-specific understanding all matter.
What the investment does—and does not—show
The Series A demonstrates that investors were willing to finance Trunk Tools’ plan. In addition to Redpoint Ventures and Innovation Endeavors, the company’s announcement named construction-linked participants and organizations including WND Ventures, Suffolk Technologies, AEC Angels, STO Building Group, Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures, Thornton Tomasetti/TTWiiN and Charps. Investor participation is not proof that each organization became a paying customer or endorsed every product claim.
TechCrunch reported in August 2024 that Trunk Tools had a double-digit number of construction-industry customers and thousands of users. That report also described a 30-person New York team at the time, a figure that should not be mistaken for current headcount. The cited coverage did not provide revenue, retention, audited productivity results or a detailed customer list. A venture round is evidence of investor support, not proof of profitability, broad adoption or technical superiority.

Trunk Tools’ later company materials describe a broader platform and report more than 100 employees, more than 500 live jobsites and more than $50 billion in construction volume on the platform. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited measures of adoption or impact. The company also advertises metrics such as 87% verified field accuracy and time savings per field question or field member on its homepage; without the task definitions, test methodology and denominator, readers should treat them as marketing claims rather than comparable performance benchmarks.

The company’s 2026 materials list integrations with Procore, Autodesk, SharePoint, Box, Dropbox and Egnyte, and describe products including TrunkReview and TrunkBid alongside Cortex and TrunkBrowse. Integration availability and functionality can vary by workflow and deployment, so a buyer should verify the specific systems and permissions supported for its projects.
What a construction buyer should verify
For a general contractor, owner or construction-technology team considering an enterprise AI platform, a compelling demo is not enough. The tool must work against the organization’s actual documents, systems and procedures. Before deployment, buyers should test it on representative projects and ask:
- Which document and drawing formats are supported, and how are revisions and superseded records handled?
- Can answers cite the exact source and section, and can users distinguish current material from outdated or conflicting documents?
- How are project permissions, data separation, identity management, audit logs, retention and confidential plans handled?
- Does the system integrate with existing project platforms, and how much cleanup or synchronization is required before its answers are useful?
- Can workers use it in the field through the channels they already rely on, or does it add steps and training?
- Does the product only answer questions, or can it draft or update workflows—and what review and approval trail applies to those actions?
- What are the contract term, implementation costs, minimum commitments and renewal terms? Trunk Tools does not publish self-serve pricing, so buyers should request a scoped proposal.
AI answers can be plausible but wrong, especially when documents conflict, relevant records have not been ingested, or a citation points to a superseded revision. For safety-critical, contract-critical or cost-critical decisions, workers and responsible professionals need to verify the source and retain accountability. A system that retrieves information is not automatically a replacement for a superintendent, engineer, architect or safety professional.
The larger question
Buchner’s career gives Trunk Tools a clear founder-market connection: she has worked in the environment its software is meant to serve. The company’s opportunity is to turn that familiarity into tools that reduce the friction between project information and field decisions. Its funding and expanding product lineup show momentum, but the harder test is whether construction organizations can trust the system on live work, integrate it into established processes and demonstrate measurable value without compromising safety, accuracy or accountability.
