The appointment put a newly created, company-wide Business AI organization under his leadership. Herzig later became SAP’s chief technology officer (CTO), effective February 1, 2025; SAP’s leadership pages now identify him as CTO rather than CAIO.
What SAP announced in 2024
SAP created an end-to-end growth area for SAP Business AI and named Herzig to lead it. He reported directly to CEO Christian Klein. The remit covered the AI value chain, from research and product development through go-to-market work and customer implementation, as SAP sought to embed AI across its enterprise-software portfolio. SAP’s February 2024 announcement described an organizational change, not the launch of a single new AI product.
The timing matters: the role took effect in January 2024, before SAP made the appointment public on February 19. It is therefore accurate to call Herzig SAP’s CAIO during that period, but not to present that as his current public title.
Why SAP created a dedicated AI leadership role
SAP’s stated rationale was to coordinate AI across the company rather than treat it as a feature owned by one product team. That structure connected research, engineering, marketing, enablement, sales and go-to-market activity, and implementation. The strategic aim was to make AI capabilities work across SAP’s portfolio and business processes.

That approach reflects a shift from standalone generative-AI experiments toward AI embedded in enterprise workflows. For business software, usefulness depends not only on a model but also on access to relevant business data, process context, permissions, integration and governance. That is an interpretation of the organizational design, not a claim that the appointment itself demonstrated customer results.
What Herzig’s CAIO remit covered
SAP’s later biography describes his AI-era work as spanning the design and engineering of AI innovations, go-to-market, marketing, enablement and integration across SAP’s portfolio. His remit was broad, but it should not be read as personal ownership of every AI model or engineering team at SAP.
The distinction is visible in the original announcement: Walter Sun remained global head of AI and responsible for product-engineering efforts in Business AI. Herzig led the broader AI growth area, while Sun’s role focused on product engineering. SAP described complementary responsibilities, not a replacement. Sun had joined SAP from Microsoft in September 2023. SAP’s announcement provides the company’s account of both roles.
Herzig’s background at SAP
Herzig joined SAP as a working student in 2009 and later held engineering, architecture, product and leadership positions. SAP’s biography highlights his work across the company’s products and user experiences. He holds a PhD in computer science from Dresden University of Technology. These details help explain why SAP placed an executive with a technical and product background over a remit that crossed research, engineering and commercialization. SAP’s biography of Herzig lists his career and education.

How the CAIO role expanded into the CTO role
On January 23, 2025, SAP announced that Herzig would become global CTO effective February 1, 2025. SAP said he would initially continue his CAIO responsibilities. The expanded remit included technology strategy, innovation, research, corporate development, Business AI and sustainability. SAP’s 2025 leadership announcement documents the transition.
In the latest SAP leadership information cited here, Herzig is listed as CTO. His biography describes the CAIO position as a past role and also identifies him as chief product officer of SAP Business AI Platform. His CTO responsibilities span platform, data and AI capabilities, including SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP HANA Cloud, as well as products such as SAP Cloud ALM, SAP LeanIX, SAP Signavio and WalkMe. SAP’s Extended Board page lists his public leadership title, while his SAP biography details the remit.

What SAP’s later AI platform strategy shows
SAP’s May 2026 Sapphire coverage describes a broader Business AI Platform strategy organized around build, context and governance. The announcement discusses Joule Studio for creating agents and SAP AI Agent Hub for discovering, managing and governing them. These are later developments in SAP’s AI strategy, not products announced with Herzig’s 2024 appointment.
The progression helps explain why AI leadership became closely connected to the CTO portfolio: building AI applications is only one part of deploying them in a large company. The platform also needs business context and controls for how agents access data and act. SAP said AI Agent Hub was planned for general availability in Q3 2026 and would be included in SAP Business AI Platform at no additional charge. That is an announcement-level statement; it does not establish identical availability or contractual terms for every customer or product edition. SAP’s Sapphire 2026 coverage describes the platform direction and announced timing.

What the appointment means for SAP customers
For customers, the significance is less about an executive title than about SAP’s intention to connect AI with its applications, platform and enterprise data. Organizations evaluating SAP’s AI capabilities should assess whether a proposed feature fits their own products and workflows rather than assuming there is one universally available SAP AI tool.
What to assess before adopting AI features
- Product and entitlement: Confirm the capability is available for the specific SAP product, cloud edition, release, region and contract. Availability can differ, and an announcement is not proof of general availability in every environment.
- Data and process context: Check which SAP and non-SAP data the feature can use, how current and reliable that data is, and whether it reflects the workflow the AI is expected to support.
- Permissions and governance: Establish which users and agents can access data or take actions, what controls and audit records apply, and how exceptions are handled.
- Implementation effort: Account for integration, data cleanup, process redesign, implementation partners and employee change management. A feature being embedded in an application does not by itself guarantee measurable business value.
- Total commercial scope: Ask what is included in the existing agreement and what may require additional entitlements, usage capacity, services or fees. A claim that a particular component is included should not be generalized to all AI usage or implementation.
SAP’s integrated approach may be attractive to organizations already operating substantial SAP estates, because business-process context and application integration can matter as much as model capability. The trade-off is that a wider SAP footprint can bring ecosystem dependence, configuration complexity and a need for specialized skills. Companies seeking only a low-cost standalone assistant may find an enterprise platform approach broader than their actual requirement.
