That guidance comes from his career transitions across technology and automotive businesses, as described in a 2024 EE Times interview.
What Sanjay Gupta said about comfort and change
Asked what advice he would give his younger self, Gupta said: “Whenever you get into a zone of comfort, that is the time to make a change; and get good mentors.” The interview’s headline paraphrases the first part as getting “too comfortable”; the quoted wording in the article is “get into a zone of comfort.”
His point is not simply to change jobs whenever work feels familiar. It is to notice when comfort has become a reason to stop learning or pursuing a meaningful opportunity, and to pair any move with guidance from people whose judgment you trust.
How his career gives that advice context
In a profile published September 26, 2024, Nitin Dahad traced Gupta’s career from Duet Technologies through Motorola, Freescale and NXP, then into automotive and back to semiconductors. The article identified Gupta at that time as chief development officer of L&T Semiconductor Technologies; that is a publication-date attribution, not confirmation of his current role.

The profile says Gupta’s team developed what it described as the first chip from India for the Motorola Razr, and that he became NXP’s youngest country manager. It also describes a two-year period as CEO of Indian automotive Tier 1 company Minda Corporation before his move to L&T Semiconductor Technologies. These milestones are reported by the interview, rather than independently established here.
Gupta told Dahad that he wanted to do something different in 2022. His move from semiconductors to Minda, and then back to a semiconductor company, illustrates the kind of professional change behind his advice: moving into unfamiliar work can require learning a new industry and its customers, not merely changing an employer.
His advice for finding opportunity in India
For people looking for opportunities in India, Gupta emphasized patience, working within one’s circle of influence and frugal innovation. He described a tension he had encountered: multinational companies can bring strong processes and structure, yet those habits may miss entrepreneurial openings; meanwhile, he said, cost sensitivity shapes the Indian market. These are his observations from the interview, not universal rules about either Indian businesses or multinational companies.

Gupta named Gregg Lowe, Lars Reger and Ron Martino among the mentors mentioned in the profile. He credited Lowe with advice about connecting with people at every level and bringing everyone along. That detail adds a practical dimension to “get good mentors”: career change is not only an individual decision; relationships and the ability to work with others also matter.
