The SanDisk 4TB Extreme Portable SSD was reported at $229.99 in deal coverage in November 2024 and again in a 2025 Prime Day roundup. Those are historical prices, not confirmation of a deal today. Before buying, verify the current listing, seller, stock, capacity, and model number.
Is the $229.99 price current?
No current price is established. Extreme Tech’s November 21, 2024 report hosted by Yahoo Tech described a $229.99 offer, compared with an asserted original price of $359.99. Macworld’s 2025 Prime Day roundup also listed the 4TB model at $229.99. Neither report verifies retailer pricing or availability on October 4, 2026.
For a purchase decision, treat $229.99 as a historical reference point, not a live quote. Check the retailer’s current price and stock, and make sure the product page identifies the 4TB Extreme Portable SSD rather than another capacity or the Extreme PRO line.
Which drive is the listing for?
SanDisk identifies the black 4TB version as model SDSSDE61-4T00-G25; other 4TB color variants are in the SDSSDE61 family. Confirm the exact capacity and model in the retailer listing, because the standard Extreme Portable SSD and Extreme PRO are different product lines. SanDisk’s product page describes the Extreme Portable SSD and its specifications.

What performance and protection does SanDisk claim?
Speed
SanDisk advertises sequential speeds of up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, based on the manufacturer’s internal testing. These are maximum claims, not guaranteed sustained transfer rates. SanDisk says results can be lower depending on the host device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors. Your computer, connection, and workload therefore matter when judging how quickly large files will transfer.
Drop, water, and dust resistance
SanDisk lists up to three-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance, also based on internal testing. IP65 does not mean waterproof: SanDisk describes a limited water-flow test and says the drive must be clean and dry before use. The ratings should not be read as a guarantee that the drive or its data will survive every fall, spill, or exposure.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5)
Will it work with your devices?
SanDisk lists USB Type-C devices such as phones, laptops, and tablets, and names iOS 13+, Android 11+, macOS 11+, and Windows 10+ among the operating-system categories. The package listing includes a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Check your device’s port, operating-system requirements, and the retailer’s package details before purchase; having a compatible connector does not guarantee that every device will support every use case.
What should you know about security and warranty?
SanDisk says password protection uses 256-bit AES hardware encryption, but that feature is not compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, including Android devices. If you plan to use the drive with a phone, do not assume you can set or use that password protection there.

SanDisk lists a five-year limited warranty. The applicable terms may depend on where and how you buy the drive, so review the warranty terms for your geography and purchase before relying on that coverage.

A low historical price alone cannot establish that this is the best option for your needs. Compare the current price with the capacity you need, your host device and connector, the transfer performance you can actually use, physical protection, and warranty terms. Also weigh portability against a desktop drive if the SSD will mostly stay in one place. The available sources do not provide controlled comparative benchmarks, so advertised maximum speeds do not prove this model is faster or a better value than a competitor.
