Counterpoint Research data reported for Q1 2026 put Samsung’s global shipments down 28% year over year and its estimated share at 5%, from 7% a year earlier. Those are shipment estimates—not a direct measure of watches bought by consumers, Samsung’s smartwatch revenue, or its installed base. Galaxy Watch8 launched on July 9, 2025, so the current question is whether the Watch8 generation can help Samsung regain ground.
What the reported decline measures
Shipment estimates track units sent into sales channels; they are not the same as sell-through, or purchases by consumers. Nor do they establish Samsung’s smartwatch revenue or profit, or how many people continue to use Galaxy Watches. A lower shipment share can signal weaker market momentum, but it does not prove that consumer sales, revenue, or the installed base fell by the same percentage.
The available figures come from market-research estimates reported by Counterpoint and media outlets, not a Samsung disclosure of smartwatch revenue. The 18% and 28% figures below cover different periods and reporting contexts, so they should not be read as a like-for-like acceleration calculation.
| Period | Reported signal | What it says—and does not say |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 2025 | Samsung shipments declined 18% year over year in Counterpoint’s major-brand/HLOS smartwatch reporting. | Indicates weakness before Watch8; it is not a measure of retail purchases. Counterpoint Research |
| July 9, 2025 | Samsung announced Galaxy Watch8, Watch8 Classic, and the 2025 Galaxy Watch Ultra. | The launch date makes “ahead of Watch8” a historical framing. Samsung’s launch announcement |
| Q1 2026 | Reported Samsung shipments fell 28% year over year; estimated share moved from 7% to 5%. | Suggests the decline continued after launch, but does not isolate Watch8’s effect or establish sell-through. Android Authority and 9to5Google |
Samsung is losing momentum, but the category picture is broader
The figures support a Samsung-specific concern; they do not prove that consumers have abandoned smartwatches or that the whole category is collapsing. Apple also declined in the 2025 reporting, while Huawei, Xiaomi and lower-cost brands compete for buyers at different price points. Google’s Pixel Watch targets Android users, and Garmin is a major consideration for sport-focused buyers. These movements do not show that any one rival received Samsung’s lost units: market-share changes are not a customer-by-customer migration record.

Global totals also conceal regional differences. A shipment estimate for the world does not establish that Samsung fell by the same amount in the United States, South Korea, Europe, China, or other markets. Full-featured smartwatches also compete in a different way from simpler fitness bands, so category boundaries matter when interpreting market reports.
What Galaxy Watch8 changed
Watch8 refreshed Samsung’s mainstream proposition, combining hardware changes with a new software generation and health and fitness features. Samsung lists an Exynos W1000 processor, Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch for the Watch8 and Watch8 Classic in its Q1 2026 interim report.

Hardware and design
- Samsung describes Watch8 as thinner and lighter, with a cushion-shaped case and Dynamic Lug bands.
- The company claims display brightness of up to 3,000 nits. This is a specification claim, not an independent comparison of visibility in everyday use.
- The listed battery capacities are 325mAh for the 40mm Watch8, 435mAh for the 44mm Watch8, and 445mAh for the 46mm Watch8 Classic. Capacity alone does not establish real-world battery life.
Software, health, and fitness
- Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch bring the software generation Samsung introduced with this lineup, alongside Gemini integration.
- Samsung highlights sleep and bedtime guidance, vascular-stress measurement during sleep, Running Coach and personalized training plans, and an Antioxidant Index.
- Availability and requirements can vary by feature, country, compatible phone, Samsung account, software version, and Samsung Health setup. Check Samsung’s U.S. Watch8 page and local feature terms before buying. Health tools are not a substitute for medical diagnosis.
These changes make Watch8 a more capable product on paper, but a feature list cannot demonstrate that shipments or market share recovered. Nor does the Q1 2026 decline establish that Watch8 caused the result: launch timing, channel inventory, regional releases, product mix, promotions, economic conditions, and the prior-year comparison can all affect shipment totals. The sources available here do not establish Watch8 sell-through or its exact causal effect.
Why a product refresh may not be enough
Several factors could contribute to Samsung’s difficulty, but the shipment figures do not establish any one cause. Annual upgrades may feel incremental to owners whose older watches remain useful; buyers can also choose between premium devices and cheaper alternatives. Battery life and differentiation remain recurring challenges for Wear OS watches, while Samsung’s deepest integration advantages are concentrated among Galaxy-phone owners. Huawei and other brands may compete more strongly on price or battery life in some international markets. These are plausible explanations, not confirmed findings about why Samsung’s shipments fell.

Samsung is also building a broader health ecosystem around Galaxy phones, Samsung Health, Galaxy Buds, and Galaxy Ring. Samsung positions the Ring as a discreet tracker with up to seven days of battery life in its Watch8 and Ring announcement. A ring could complement a watch for some users or compete for health-focused buyers, but no evidence here establishes that it has displaced Galaxy Watch purchases.
Which watch makes sense for your budget and phone?
For a personal-finance decision, compare the price you can actually pay—not just list price—with the features you will use and the cost of LTE service if you need it. Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP sheet is a reference, not a current street-price quote; trade-ins, bundles, and retailer promotions can change the effective cost.

| Option | U.S. MSRP/reference price | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch8 | 40mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi $349.99; 40mm LTE $399.99; 44mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi $379.99; 44mm LTE $429.99. | Galaxy-phone owners seeking a current, mainstream Android smartwatch. | Costs more than Watch7; some health features have ecosystem or regional requirements. LTE adds cost and may require a carrier plan. |
| Galaxy Watch7 | Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: 40mm $249.99; 44mm $279.99. LTE: 40mm $299.99; 44mm $329.99. | Value-minded Samsung users if the actual price is meaningfully below Watch8. | Older design and software generation; verify current retailer pricing and support details. |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic | Bluetooth/Wi-Fi $499.99; LTE $549.99. | Buyers who want a traditional appearance and rotating bezel. | Premium price and a larger, heavier case that may be less comfortable for sleep tracking. |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | LTE $649.99. | Outdoor users who want rugged, endurance-oriented positioning and LTE. | Large and expensive for everyday notifications, basic health tracking, or casual exercise. |
Prices in the table are U.S. MSRP figures from Samsung’s March 2026 wearables price sheet, not necessarily the price available when you shop. Samsung’s Watch8 product page is another place to check current offers; its price and trade-in promotions can change.
- iPhone owner: Apple Watch is the natural ecosystem fit; it is not a practical Galaxy Watch replacement for Android users. See Apple’s Watch page.
- Android or Pixel user: Compare Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch based on services, phone compatibility, battery needs, health features, and support. Pixel Watch is more Google-centric, but it is not automatically the better choice. See Google’s watch page.
- Serious runner, cyclist, hiker, or endurance athlete: Garmin may be a better match for training metrics, GPS, and sports tools, with less emphasis on app-centric smartwatch integration. See Garmin’s U.S. site.
What would count as a real recovery?
Samsung would need more than an appealing launch to demonstrate a turnaround. A sustained improvement in shipment share across later reporting periods would be a clearer market signal; sell-through data would help show whether consumers are buying the watches, while Samsung financial disclosures would be needed to assess smartwatch revenue or profitability. Regional results and the role of Galaxy Ring would also help explain where its wearable strategy is gaining traction. The figures currently available show continued shipment weakness through Q1 2026, not the outcome of a later recovery.
