The reported directive covered executives at Samsung Electronics and named affiliates—not all Samsung employees. The reports described a response to weaker-than-expected business performance and economic uncertainty, but do not establish that the policy improved results or remains in effect in 2026.
What Samsung’s reported six-day workweek involved
SamMobile reported on April 18, 2024, that Samsung Group executives would work six days a week, adding either Saturday or Sunday to their regular five-day schedule. The report named executives at Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDS as covered by the directive. It said employees below executive level would continue their usual five-day week. SamMobile’s April 18 report described a company directive; it did not establish that the policy had a uniform scope across every Samsung operation worldwide.
Why the change was reported
Reports linked the directive to weaker-than-expected performance at major business units in 2023 and economic pressures that included a weak Korean won, higher oil prices and rising borrowing costs. Entrepreneur quoted an unnamed Samsung Group company executive, via Korea Economic Daily, as saying: “Considering that performance of our major units, including Samsung Electronics Co., fell short of expectations in 2023, we are introducing the six-day work week for executives to inject a sense of crisis and make all-out efforts to overcome this crisis.” Entrepreneur’s April 18, 2024 report said Samsung had not immediately answered its question about whether the change covered executives globally. That unanswered question leaves the policy’s geographic reach unclear; it does not prove that the policy applied globally.
What Samsung Electronics’ 2023 figures show—and what they do not
Samsung Electronics reported KRW 258.9 trillion in consolidated sales, KRW 6.6 trillion in consolidated operating profit and KRW 15.5 trillion in consolidated net income for 2023. These are Samsung Electronics figures, not financial totals for Samsung Group as a whole. They describe the company’s reported results, not the effects of adding a workday for executives. Does the policy still apply?
The cited coverage documents what was reported in April 2024. It does not establish whether Samsung continued the arrangement after that coverage or whether it is in force as of October 8, 2026. The reports also do not independently verify how consistently the directive was implemented. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a reported 2024 policy than as a current Samsung-wide workweek rule.
