Samsung Electronics’ operating profit rose to KRW 6.61 trillion in the first quarter of 2024, from about KRW 640 billion a year earlier—an increase of roughly 933%. The headline does not mean revenue or net income rose tenfold: revenue increased about 13%, and the profit surge chiefly reflected a semiconductor business returning to profit after a severe downturn.
What increased tenfold?
The comparison covers January 1 through March 31, 2024, against the same quarter in 2023. Samsung announced the results on April 30, 2024. Its reported operating-profit increase was dramatic partly because the prior-year figure was unusually low.
| Measure | Q1 2024 | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Consolidated revenue | KRW 71.92 trillion | Up about 13% year over year, from approximately KRW 63.75 trillion |
| Consolidated operating profit | KRW 6.61 trillion | Up about 933% year over year, from approximately KRW 640.2 billion |
| Total profit for the period | KRW 6.755 trillion | Samsung interim report figure; the tenfold headline is about operating profit |
| Profit attributable to owners of the parent | KRW 6.621 trillion | Samsung interim report figure; not the measure behind the headline |
| Device Solutions (semiconductors) revenue | KRW 23.14 trillion | Segment result; Samsung’s segment reporting can include intersegment sales |
| Device Solutions operating profit | KRW 1.91 trillion | Recovered from a KRW 4.58 trillion operating loss in Q1 2023 |
Samsung’s official Q1 results report consolidated revenue and operating profit. The more precise profit figures come from its Q1 interim report. These are distinct accounting measures: revenue is sales, operating profit is earnings from operations before non-operating items and tax, and profit attributable to parent-company owners is a net-income measure for those shareholders.
Why did operating profit rebound so sharply?
The semiconductor business swung from loss to profit
The biggest change in the earnings mix was the Device Solutions division’s return to profitability. It moved from a KRW 4.58 trillion operating loss in Q1 2023 to KRW 1.91 trillion in Q1 2024. Contemporaneous reporting described this as its first quarterly profit since Q4 2022. The reversal, rather than a tenfold increase in chip shipments, helps explain why consolidated operating profit grew far faster than sales.
#1 Best Overall
Memory conditions improved as DRAM and NAND prices recovered, demand strengthened, and sales shifted toward higher-value products. Samsung cited demand across servers, storage, PCs, and mobile devices, as well as products including DDR5, server SSDs, UFS 4.0, and HBM-related offerings. Higher prices and a more favorable product mix can lift revenue and margins even when shipment volumes do not multiply.
Samsung’s segment figures are reported within its organizational structure and may include intersegment sales, so they should not be added mechanically as if every line were an independent consolidated business. The division-level figures and quarterly comparison are in the Q1 2024 earnings presentation; the prior-year loss comparison was also reported by Reuters via Investing.com.

A low comparison base magnified the percentage
Samsung’s approximately KRW 5.97 trillion year-over-year operating-profit improvement is substantial in absolute terms, but the percentage looks especially large because Q1 2023 operating profit was only about KRW 640 billion while the memory-chip business was in a deep slump. A business returning from losses or near-zero earnings can post a huge percentage increase without expanding its overall sales at anything like the same rate. Yonhap reported the approximate 932.8% increase in operating profit for the quarter (Yonhap News Agency).
How much was AI responsible for?
AI infrastructure was a meaningful tailwind, not a complete explanation for the quarter. Generative-AI systems require substantial memory and storage capacity, supporting demand for data-center servers and high-performance memory. Samsung said it saw solid generative-AI demand trends and expected global IT demand to improve in the second half of 2024.

But the recovery also reflected the broader memory cycle: prices were rising from depressed levels, inventories and demand were normalizing, and customers across servers, PCs, phones, and storage were buying memory. HBM was strategically important in the AI market, but the Q1 results do not establish that HBM alone—or AI products generally—accounted for most of the division’s profit. Nor do they show that Samsung had secured dominance in AI memory; the quarter’s earnings figures are not a market-share or competitive-ranking measure.
What did Samsung’s other businesses contribute?
Chips were the central recovery driver, but Samsung’s result was not a pure semiconductor story. Its broader Device eXperience division recorded KRW 4.07 trillion in operating profit. The Mobile eXperience business benefited from strong Galaxy S24 sales, while Visual Display and Digital Appliances also recorded higher profitability. Samsung Display and Harman added smaller contributions to consolidated operating profit. Samsung’s results release provides the business commentary, and its earnings presentation contains the segment breakdown.

What did Samsung expect, and what could interrupt the recovery?
Samsung expected solid second-quarter conditions, supported by AI-related demand and continued memory strength. That was management’s outlook at the time, not a confirmed result for later quarters. It also reported KRW 11.3 trillion in capital expenditure in Q1 2024, including KRW 9.7 trillion for Device Solutions, with spending focused on memory facilities, packaging, HBM, DDR5, and other advanced products. Those investments reflected plans to serve anticipated demand, not proof that the forecast would be realized.
- Memory-cycle risk: DRAM and NAND are cyclical. Renewed oversupply or weaker demand can pressure prices and margins.
- AI concentration and execution: AI demand may be concentrated among a limited number of customers and products. HBM qualification, customer adoption, and competition from SK Hynix and Micron can affect how quickly demand becomes Samsung revenue and profit.
- Other semiconductor businesses: System LSI and foundry faced slower improvement and ongoing profitability and utilization challenges, which could offset memory gains.
- Consumer demand: Galaxy S24 strength supported mobile earnings, but it does not establish that the same pace of smartphone demand will persist.
- Currency: Samsung said the weaker Korean won had a positive operating-profit impact of approximately KRW 0.3 trillion versus the previous quarter. Exchange-rate effects can change direction.
The result was a major rebound, not a company-wide quarterly profit record or evidence of a permanent tenfold expansion. It showed how strongly earnings can respond when memory prices and demand recover, with AI adding momentum while cyclical and competitive risks remain.
