That could mean higher prices for some phones, PCs and other devices—but Samsung has not announced a blanket price increase for all electronics. Buyers may instead see smaller discounts, pricier high-storage models or lower base specifications.
What Samsung has actually said
Samsung’s second-quarter 2026 results describe a memory market in which demand for server DRAM, enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs) and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) is rising with AI infrastructure investment. Samsung said demand was expected to outpace supply in the second half of 2026 despite efforts to increase production. Its Memory Business reported record quarterly revenue and operating profit, with industry-wide memory price increases contributing to the result. Samsung’s results and outlook do not specify a retail price increase for its phones, TVs, appliances or other finished products.

There is also evidence of pressure on device makers. Samsung’s first-quarter 2026 report said its System LSI business faced “pricing pressure from set manufacturers due to rising memory costs.” Set manufacturers are companies that assemble finished products, including phones and PCs. Samsung’s 2025 fourth-quarter earnings-call materials had already said sharp memory-price increases were creating added cost pressure for mobile and PC makers. The first-quarter report and the earnings-call materials describe industry cost pressure, not a confirmed price list for consumer products.
One published estimate gives a sense of the component-market movement: Seoul Economic Daily reported that Samsung’s second-quarter commentary indicated DRAM prices rose about 40% and NAND prices about 60% during that quarter. Those are reported memory-market movements, not retail price increases for phones or other finished devices. Seoul Economic Daily’s report is the source for those figures.

Why AI demand can affect consumer electronics
Different kinds of memory do different jobs
- DRAM is temporary working memory. Phones use mobile DRAM such as LPDDR; PCs and servers commonly use DDR-family memory.
- NAND is nonvolatile storage: it retains data without power and is used in SSDs, phones and tablets.
- HBM is high-bandwidth memory used alongside demanding processors, especially AI accelerators. It is specialized and is not interchangeable one-for-one with laptop or phone RAM.
AI systems need more than accelerators. Their infrastructure also uses server DRAM, high-capacity enterprise SSDs and HBM. Samsung’s second-quarter outlook pointed to continued AI-related investment and wider adoption of agentic AI as drivers of demand for server DRAM, enterprise SSDs and HBM. Its first-quarter presentation described a focus on HBM4, DDR5, SOCAMM2 and next-generation enterprise SSDs. Samsung’s presentation outlines that product strategy.
Demand for these products can influence where manufacturers direct investment and production effort, but it would be misleading to say that every HBM chip directly replaces a phone memory chip. Advanced products also require specialized manufacturing, packaging, testing and customer qualification. Building and qualifying additional capacity takes time, so supply cannot instantly adjust to a demand surge. Samsung’s public outlook supports tight conditions in the second half of 2026; it does not establish a date when prices will return to earlier levels.
Which products could feel the pressure most?
Phones and tablets
Phones with more RAM or storage are more exposed than devices with modest configurations. Manufacturers may charge more for higher storage tiers, limit discounts, or reserve larger memory configurations for premium models. For tablets, vendors may try to protect entry-level price points by keeping base storage low and charging more for upgrades. These are possible responses to component costs, not announced changes for every brand or model.

PCs, laptops and consumer SSDs
PC makers face costs for both system memory and storage, including DDR5 configurations and NVMe SSDs. A higher advertised price is one possibility; others include smaller base SSDs, fewer discounts or more expensive 32GB and 64GB configurations. Laptop buyers should pay particular attention to upgradeability: if RAM is soldered to the board, the capacity chosen at purchase may be the capacity they keep. Samsung specifically identified added memory-cost pressure for mobile and PC makers in its earnings-call materials.
Consoles, handhelds, TVs and appliances
Consoles and handhelds use memory and storage, but fixed hardware margins, long production cycles and supplier contracts can affect when or whether costs reach buyers. New launches and redesigns may be more exposed than products already being made under existing arrangements. TVs and appliances also contain memory, but their memory requirements differ from those of phones and PCs; the available statements do not establish that memory is a dominant cost in every TV or appliance. Product-specific price claims need product-specific evidence.
Servers and enterprise equipment
Server hardware is directly exposed to demand for high-capacity DRAM, HBM and enterprise SSDs. Business buyers may experience higher component costs, though supply assurance, longer-term agreements and the wider infrastructure budget can matter as much as spot prices.

How a component increase might show up on a receipt
A memory price rise does not translate mechanically into an equal percentage increase in the price of a finished product. Memory is only one part of a device’s total cost, and the outcome depends on how much memory it uses, what the maker paid under existing contracts, inventory bought earlier, launch timing, regional costs and the product’s margins.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Higher sticker price: the manufacturer passes some of the added cost to buyers.
- Fewer or smaller discounts: the list price stays put, but shoppers pay closer to it.
- Less memory or storage at the same starting price: the headline price is stable while the base configuration changes.
- Lower margin: the manufacturer absorbs some or all of the increase to defend market share.
- Fewer lower-priced configurations: a vendor prioritizes premium models or limits products with tighter margins.
For comparisons, check the actual RAM and storage configuration, not just the starting price or product name. Also compare the price of the configuration you would buy, the discount available today and whether the memory can be upgraded later.

Samsung is both a memory supplier and a maker of consumer devices. Its semiconductor business can benefit when memory prices and demand rise; Samsung reported record quarterly results for its Memory Business in the second quarter of 2026. Its device businesses, meanwhile, face higher input costs. Internal transactions can complicate how those costs appear in company accounts, but expensive memory still has an economic cost for the business making the finished product.

That split is why a strong result for Samsung’s memory business does not prove that every Samsung device will become more expensive—or that Samsung’s device businesses are insulated from the increase. The group’s divisions can experience the same market from opposite sides.
Should you buy now or wait?
There is no reliable blanket rule to buy every device immediately. Samsung’s outlook signals continuing supply tightness in the second half of 2026, but it does not guarantee further consumer price increases or say when the memory cycle will turn. Memory markets are cyclical: weaker AI investment, softer phone or PC demand, new capacity, improved yields or an inventory correction could ease pressure.

- You need the device soon and have found a configuration at a price you consider worthwhile.
- You need unusually high RAM or storage, especially if the device cannot be upgraded later.
- A suitable model is already discounted; a later reduction in promotions could matter even if its list price does not change.
Waiting may make sense if
- The purchase is optional and a product refresh or seasonal sale is near.
- You can use your current device longer, or would accept a lower memory configuration.
- You expect competing models or promotions and are willing to accept that prices may not fall on your schedule.
Before upgrading a PC
- Confirm the motherboard or laptop supports the intended memory generation and capacity.
- Check how many memory slots are available and whether memory is soldered.
- Verify the SSD interface, available M.2 slots and warranty terms before buying an upgrade.
- Do not buy extra capacity solely from fear of a shortage: prices can reverse as supply and demand change.
For a laptop with soldered RAM, choosing enough memory at purchase can be more important than trying to upgrade later. For a phone, compare storage tiers and the prices of the actual models you are considering; a higher component cost does not mean doubling storage should double a phone’s manufacturing cost.
