Samsung Electronics posted record quarterly revenue and operating profit in Q2 2026, but those company-wide highs did not reflect strength across every business. Its semiconductor-led Device Solutions division generated most of the profit, while the combined Mobile eXperience (MX) and Networks businesses reported an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion.
That is not a disclosed phone-only loss: Samsung reports MX and Networks together. The results show a sharp earnings squeeze in that combined segment even as Samsung said Galaxy S26 and Galaxy A sales helped its revenue grow year over year.
How can Samsung post record profits while its phone business loses money?
The figures cover different parts of Samsung Electronics. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Samsung reported consolidated revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion, both quarterly records. Its Device Solutions (DS) division, led by semiconductors, accounted for KRW 127.5 trillion in revenue and KRW 89.2 trillion in operating profit. Those DS results explain how the company could set records while another segment lost money.
Samsung reported KRW 33.2 trillion in revenue and an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion for MX and Networks combined. Because the release does not break out smartphones from Networks, the loss cannot accurately be described as a standalone smartphone division result. Samsung’s Q2 2026 results provide the reported figures.

What happened to Samsung’s mobile-related earnings?
The combined MX and Networks business moved from an operating profit of KRW 2.8 trillion on revenue of KRW 38.1 trillion in Q1 2026 to an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion on revenue of KRW 33.2 trillion in Q2. That is a substantial sequential reversal, but quarter-to-quarter comparisons can reflect seasonality and changes in business mix as well as underlying cost or demand shifts. Samsung’s Q1 2026 results show the earlier figures.

Revenue grew year over year, but costs weighed on earnings
Samsung said MX revenue rose year over year, supported by solid Galaxy S26 series sales and strong Galaxy A-series momentum. Earnings nevertheless declined because of elevated component costs across the industry, according to the company’s Q2 release. In other words, the reported weakness was in profitability, not year-over-year revenue growth. The release does not quantify the component-cost impact or provide a standalone smartphone margin, so it does not establish how much of the loss came from phone hardware, Networks, or other factors within the combined segment.

What the newer Q3 update does—and does not—show
On October 8, 2026, Samsung issued guidance estimating Q3 consolidated sales of approximately KRW 195 trillion and operating profit of approximately KRW 107.40 trillion. Those are estimates, not finalized results, and the guidance does not disclose Q3 MX performance. It therefore cannot confirm whether the mobile-related business recovered or remained under pressure.
