Samsung Electronics estimated third-quarter 2026 operating profit at 107.4 trillion won, nearly nine times its 12.17 trillion won result a year earlier. The company announced the preliminary estimate on October 8, alongside estimated revenue of 195 trillion won. The figures point to a sharp rebound, but they are not the final results or a breakdown of which businesses generated the profit.
What Samsung’s nearly ninefold profit estimate means
The 107.4 trillion won figure is Samsung’s preliminary estimate for operating profit in the July–September quarter, not a final, detailed earnings statement. Reuters reported a contemporaneous conversion of about US$80.17 billion. Samsung also estimated revenue at 195 trillion won, which Reuters said was up 127% year over year.

The “nearly ninefold” comparison is year over year: the estimate is compared with 12.17 trillion won in operating profit in the same quarter of 2025. It does not mean profit rose ninefold from the immediately preceding quarter. For a sequential comparison, Reuters cited company-wide operating profit of 89.49 trillion won in Q2 2026. Samsung’s own Q2 release separately reported 89.2 trillion won of operating profit for its semiconductor (DS) division; that divisional figure is not the company-wide total.

A day earlier, Reuters had described 106.1 trillion won as the estimate from 21 analysts. That was an analyst forecast, not Samsung guidance. The LSEG estimate had fallen 7.7% from its level at the end of August, reflecting concerns including moderating memory-price gains and the stronger won.

Why AI-related memory demand is driving expectations
Server memory and AI infrastructure
AI data centers need high-bandwidth memory (HBM) alongside other server components. Samsung’s Q2 outlook said continued investment in AI infrastructure was supporting demand for server DRAM, enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs), and HBM. It also said capacity limits and rising industry prices had contributed to record memory earnings in Q2, and expected the memory market to remain undersupplied in the second half despite some moderation in mobile and PC demand.
Samsung said it planned to prioritize higher-value products including HBM4, DDR5, and SOCAMM2. These were management’s stated priorities and market outlook, not a Q3 product-by-product profit report.
Tight supply can lift prices and product mix
Reuters attributed rising memory prices to tight supply of conventional DRAM and NAND as well as demand for HBM used in AI data centers. Stronger demand can benefit a chipmaker through both sales and a more valuable product mix; constrained supply can also support pricing. Reuters said memory chips were expected to account for most of Samsung’s earnings improvement, but Samsung had not yet published a detailed Q3 segment breakdown.

That distinction matters: AI memory demand is a major explanation for the estimate, but it does not establish that memory generated all of Samsung’s operating profit. Samsung also sells smartphones and consumer electronics, and the performance of those businesses can differ from its semiconductor division.
What the price forecasts do—and do not—say
Reuters’ October 7 preview reported that conventional DRAM contract prices had risen roughly 60% quarter on quarter in Q2, citing TrendForce. For Q4 2026, TrendForce forecast a slower 10% to 15% quarter-on-quarter increase. The forecast therefore described continued price growth at a more moderate pace, not falling prices. It was a market forecast reported by Reuters, not a Samsung projection or a guarantee.
Reuters also quoted TrendForce senior vice president for research Avril Wu: “Although the market remains in a tight supply position, the pace of price growth is expected to decelerate,” referring to the expected market trend.

Why a record estimate may not mean profits keep rising
Currency can reduce the won value of overseas earnings
Reuters reported that the South Korean won appreciated 14.3% against the US dollar during Q3. When foreign-currency revenue is converted into won, a stronger won can reduce its reported won value. The exchange-rate change is specific to that quarter, not a forecast of future currency movements.

Higher chip prices can help Samsung as a memory supplier while increasing component costs for its smartphone and consumer-electronics businesses. Reuters reported that analysts expected mobile results to be weaker than anticipated, including a larger-than-expected loss; that was an analyst expectation, not a final company disclosure. The net effect across business units cannot be determined from the preliminary company-wide estimate alone.
Price growth and margins may become harder to sustain
Reuters’ October 7 preview cited an SK Securities analyst estimate of a 76% memory-chip operating margin, flat sequentially. That was an analyst estimate, not a company-reported margin. Reuters also quoted Mirae Asset Securities analyst Kim Seok-hwan: “The market’s focus has shifted to whether the sharp earnings growth that started a year ago would be sustainable.”

Competition and AI spending remain risks
Reuters identified Chinese suppliers and a possible slowdown in AI spending as longer-term risks. These are potential pressures, not established causes of a change in Samsung’s Q3 estimate. Strong demand in one quarter does not by itself show how long customers will keep investing at the same pace or how market share and prices will evolve.
When Samsung’s detailed Q3 results are due
Reuters reported that Samsung planned to publish divisional detail on October 29, 2026. Until that release, the preliminary estimate supports conclusions about the company-wide total, but not definitive claims about Q3 profit by business unit or the exact contribution of memory products. The detailed results are the key evidence for assessing how much of the reported strength came from semiconductors and how other divisions affected the total.
