Samsung affiliates are reported to plan 12.26 trillion won (US$9.15 billion) in semiconductor investment across Vietnam and South Korea, with nearly 8 trillion won (US$5.99 billion) earmarked for Vietnam. The plans cover two different activities: Samsung Electronics memory-chip testing in Thai Nguyen and Samsung Electro-Mechanics FCBGA substrate production in Vietnam and Sejong. These are planned investments, not money already spent.

How much is Samsung investing in Vietnam?

According to The Korea Herald, as reported by ANI/The Economic Times, the affiliates’ combined plan totals 12.26 trillion won (US$9.15 billion), of which nearly 8 trillion won (US$5.99 billion) is earmarked for Vietnam. The total combines separate projects by Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics; it is not a single project or a reported completed outlay. What will Samsung make or do in Vietnam?

Memory-chip testing in Thai Nguyen

The reported Samsung Electronics project is for final testing of DRAM and NAND after the chips are packaged at Samsung’s Cheonan plant in South Korea. The Korea Herald, as reported by ANI/The Economic Times, attributes the 105.79 trillion dong (US$4.09 billion) plan and target schedule to an investment submission to local authorities. The reporting says 66.64 trillion dong (US$2.58 billion), or 63% of that planned investment, is expected to come from reinvested profits from Samsung’s local operations; this is a reported expectation, not an independently checked financing disclosure. FCBGA substrates in Vietnam

Samsung Electro-Mechanics separately plans to expand production of FCBGA substrates in Vietnam and Sejong. The company says these substrates connect high-performance processors—including AI accelerators, GPUs and CPUs—to circuit boards, carrying electrical signals and power. It links the capacity expansion to demand from AI servers. Samsung Electro-Mechanics announcement Company explanation of FCBGA substrates and demand.

Is Samsung moving chip manufacturing to Vietnam?

The reported Samsung Electronics investment is for testing, not wafer fabrication. The report says the memory chips will be packaged in Cheonan, South Korea, before final testing in Thai Nguyen, and explicitly characterizes the plan as expanding testing overseas rather than shifting wafer manufacturing. It does not establish that wafer production is moving to Vietnam. The Korea Herald report as relayed by The Economic Times.
