That format emphasizes mobile Scan & Go checkout and AI-assisted exit verification. But the announcement describes a long-term remodel strategy—not proof that every club is already register-free, cashless, or employee-free.
The most important distinction is that Sam’s Club’s “AI checkout” is not an autonomous cashier. Members still scan and pay for their purchases in the Sam’s Club app. Computer vision is then used at the exit to compare the cart with the digital receipt.

What Sam’s Club actually announced
On April 11, 2025, Sam’s Club announced a plan to remodel all approximately 600 of its existing clubs in the United States and Puerto Rico. The company presented the Grapevine, Texas, club as the reference point for a future format built around digital tools, faster shopping, and a redesigned in-club experience.
The announcement was part of a broader growth strategy that also covered membership growth, new-club expansion, digital commerce, and operational improvements. It did not provide a club-by-club completion schedule or clearly state that every traditional register would immediately disappear.

Industry reporting has described the remodel format as removing traditional checkout lanes, including self-checkout, and making Scan & Go the primary way to pay. Grapevine opened as the clearest example of that register-free design. The distinction matters: a plan to remodel approximately 600 clubs is not the same as all 600 clubs already operating without registers.

How a cashier-less Sam’s Club visit works
At a club using the newer format, the shopping process generally works like this:

- Start Scan & Go. Scan each product as it goes into the cart. Check quantities and follow any prompts for weighed or multipack items.
- Review the cart. Correct missed scans, duplicate scans, and quantity errors before paying.
- Pay in the app. Scan & Go creates a digital receipt after payment is completed.
- Use the exit system. Where AI-enabled exit technology is available, walk through the exit archway and follow the on-screen or associate instructions.
- Resolve exceptions with an associate. A product that cannot be matched, a scanning error, or a restricted purchase may require manual review.
In other words, the member performs the checkout work. The exit technology is designed to reduce the friction of receipt checking after payment; it does not eliminate the need to scan products or pay through the app.
Sam’s Club introduced Scan & Go in 2016 and later integrated it into the main Sam’s Club app. The feature can also be available in related settings such as fuel stations and cafés, although the exact workflow depends on the location and transaction type. See Walmart Global Tech’s Scan & Go history.
Where the AI fits
Sam’s Club’s AI exit system is primarily a computer-vision verification layer. According to Walmart Global Tech, cameras capture multiple images of carts moving through the exit archway. Software analyzes visual characteristics such as an item’s size, shape, color, logo, and label, then compares the detected products with inventory information and the shopper’s outstanding receipt.

If the system identifies a possible mismatch, exit associates receive information to help review it. The technology is trained using millions of product images captured under different positions and lighting conditions, but that does not mean it is infallible or that human judgment has disappeared.
Sam’s Club said the technology had reached more than 120 clubs by April 2024 and reported that members exited 23% faster at participating locations. That is a company-reported performance figure, not independent testing.

What “cashier-less” does—and does not—mean

Is every Sam’s Club cashier-less now?
There is no confirmed basis for saying that every Sam’s Club has completed the transition. The evidence supports a plan to remodel approximately 600 existing clubs, Grapevine as the model for the newer format, and a broader rollout of AI exit technology. It does not establish a current, complete, club-by-club inventory of register-free locations.
Before making a special trip—particularly if you need a staffed checkout, cash payment, accessibility assistance, or a specific payment method—check with your local club. The physical layout and available fallback procedures can differ during a remodel or technology outage.

This is where the “cashier-less” label becomes incomplete. Official Sam’s Club help documentation says SNAP/EBT is accepted at club locations, while SNAP is not accepted for SamsClub.com purchases. That documentation does not establish a universal procedure for every remodeled, register-free club or confirm that every type of cash transaction can be completed without a staffed point of sale.

Sam’s Club’s Scan & Go instructions are app-based. The company’s published help content also says that when Scan & Go is unavailable, the app may direct the member to a register. That indicates a fallback exists in at least some circumstances, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every location will always have an operating staffed lane.
Members who do not use smartphones, primarily pay cash, need substantial scanning assistance, or require accessibility accommodations should ask the club in advance:
- Whether a staffed register is available.
- Whether cash and SNAP/EBT can be processed at that location’s current checkout setup.
- Whether an associate can provide a device or hands-on assistance.
- How alcohol and other restricted purchases are handled.
- What to do if a phone battery dies or mobile service fails.
- How returns, receipt lookup, and mixed-payment transactions work.

What happens when the technology fails?
A register-free workflow adds new failure points. Problems can occur when:
- A barcode will not scan.
- The wrong quantity is entered.
- An item is missed or scanned twice.
- A product is hidden beneath other goods.
- An item is removed after being scanned.
- The payment succeeds but the exit system cannot immediately match the receipt.
- The app, payment service, Wi-Fi, or mobile connection is unavailable.
- The phone battery dies before the transaction or exit process is complete.
The correct response is to stop and ask an associate for help. Do not attempt to bypass an exit alert or simply leave an item unaccounted for. Sam’s Club says exit associates receive real-time information that can help them verify flagged products.
For practical preparation, keep the app updated, sign in before entering, charge the phone, scan items as they go into the cart, review the digital receipt, and keep products visible where possible. Bring a backup payment method, but remember that payment options and fallback procedures remain location-specific.

Benefits and drawbacks for members

It may be a poorer fit for members who primarily pay cash, do not own or regularly use a smartphone, have unreliable connectivity, need substantial assistance with scanning, frequently buy restricted products, or prefer a human to handle the entire checkout process.
That does not mean the membership is automatically poor value for a less tech-comfortable shopper. It does mean the local club’s checkout policy should be part of the membership decision, alongside shopping frequency, fuel use, household size, and the availability of competing warehouse clubs.
What happens to employees?
“Cashier-less” should not be read as “employee-less.” Traditional cashiering tasks may decline at remodeled locations, but associates are still needed for member service, exit exceptions, returns, age-restricted products, accessibility support, café and fuel operations, pharmacy and optical services, fulfillment, and other club work.
The supplied sources do not establish a verified nationwide headcount impact. It is more accurate to say that the remodel may change the mix of front-end work than to claim mass layoffs or the disappearance of store employees.

Walmart executives have discussed the technology in connection with operational improvement and shrink. Those statements should be understood as management commentary, not as independent proof that the system produces a particular loss-prevention result at every club.
The model also differentiates Sam’s Club from other warehouse clubs and traditional supermarkets. But comparisons with Costco or BJ’s should be made at the local-club level: checkout layouts, payment rules, technology availability, and exception procedures can vary.
Privacy and surveillance considerations
The exit system uses cameras and computer vision to analyze carts and compare visible products with a digital receipt. That is materially different from a simple employee glancing at a paper receipt, and some members may reasonably be uncomfortable with camera-based verification.
The available sources explain the system’s cart-verification function. They do not establish claims about facial recognition, individual tracking, or data-retention periods, so those claims should not be inferred from the existence of the exit cameras alone.
What to check before visiting a remodeled club
- Confirm whether the club has traditional registers or uses the newer register-free layout.
- Ask how cash, SNAP/EBT, alcohol, pharmacy, optical, and other special transactions are handled.
- Make sure the Sam’s Club app is installed, updated, and signed in.
- Charge the phone and bring a backup payment method.
- Scan each item immediately and verify quantities.
- Review the final digital receipt before heading to the exit.
- Follow the exit archway instructions and ask an associate about any alert.
- Contact member services if you need accessibility assistance or cannot use the app.
