Sammy Cheung, Efinix’s founder and CEO, started the programmable-chip company in 2012 to address customers’ desire for alternatives in the FPGA industry, according to an EE Times video interview published October 5, 2023. The conversation is both a career story and a discussion of why he believed the industry needed a different approach.

Who is Sammy Cheung?

Cheung is a longtime FPGA-industry executive and the founder and CEO associated with Efinix. The EE Times interview traces his path into electronics, including the career break that led him to Cypress Semiconductor, before turning to the experience of building an FPGA company.

The interview was published as part of EE Times’ Silicon Grapevine video series. Nitin Dahad, EE Times editor-in-chief, is credited as its author; the publication describes Dahad’s background as spanning electronic engineering, journalism, and technology entrepreneurship.

Why did Cheung start Efinix?

EE Times says Cheung concluded in 2012 that the “clock was ticking” if he wanted to help meet customers’ desire for something different, and that he started Efinix that year. The phrase appears in the publisher’s synopsis, not a full transcript, so it should be treated as EE Times’ summary rather than confirmed verbatim dialogue.

Digilent Basys 3 Artix-7 FPGA Trainer Board: Recommended for Introductory Users
  • Designed for students and beginners looking to understand Digital Logic, fundamentals of FPGAs
  • Features the Xilinx Artix 7 FPGA compatible with Vivado Design Suite WebPACK Edition (free download available from Xilinx)
  • On board user interfaces include 16 user switches, 16 LEDs, 5 user pushbuttons, and a
  • Expansion opportunities with four Pmod ports including 3 standard 12-pin Pmod ports and 1 dual
  • Does NOT ship with micro USB cable

That account frames Efinix’s founding as a response to customer demand for alternatives in programmable chips. It does not, on its own, establish which specific competing products customers wanted to replace or prove that Efinix’s technology outperforms other FPGA approaches.

What change was the interview discussing?

The interview’s central idea is that established FPGA approaches may not be the only answer to evolving customer needs. Efinix’s company-news index places the conversation in a broader context of work on FPGA density, edge AI, RISC-V SoCs, hardware acceleration, and programmable chips. Those topics describe the company’s public technology positioning; the index does not provide comparative benchmarks or establish market-wide adoption.

Arty A7: Artix-7 FPGA Development Board for Makers and Hobbyists (Arty A7-100T)
  • Arty A7 comes in two FPGA variants: Arty A7-35T features Xilinx XC7A35TICSG324-1L. Arty A7-100T features the larger Xilinx XC7A100TCSG324-1.
  • Internal clock speeds exceeding 450MHz, On-chip analog-to-digital converter (XADC), Programmable over JTAG and Quad-SPI Flash
  • 256MB DDR3L with a 16-bit bus @ 667MHz, 16MB Quad-SPI Flash, USB-JTAG Programming circuitry, Powered from USB or any 7V-15V source
  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, USB-UART Bridge
  • 4 Switches, 4 Buttons, 1 Reset Button, 4 LEDs, 4 RGB LEDs, 4 Pmod connectors, shield connector

For a practical comparison among FPGA approaches, useful questions include programmable-logic density, suitability for edge-AI workloads, development workflow, architecture, and ecosystem maturity. The available interview materials do not supply measurements or comparative results on those axes, so they do not support a ranking of Efinix against other vendors.

What happened after Efinix was founded?

Efinix marked its tenth anniversary in 2022 by moving into new offices in Cupertino, California, according to EE Times. The interview also looks back at the highs and lows of building the company, what excites Cheung, and what he is most proud of. The publisher’s synopsis identifies these themes but does not provide detailed answers or financial and operating metrics.

What can readers conclude about Efinix’s place in the FPGA industry?

The interview presents Efinix as a company founded to pursue alternatives in programmable chips, with a wider public focus that includes FPGAs, edge AI, RISC-V, and hardware acceleration. It is useful for understanding Cheung’s motivations and the company’s origin story, not as a technical evaluation: the available text contains no market-size, revenue, funding, performance, or adoption figures specific to the interview.
