How to Store Cryptocurrency Safely After Buying It

After buying cryptocurrency, decide who will control the keys that authorize transactions: you, through a self-custody wallet, or a third-party provider such as an exchange. A wallet does not hold coins like a physical purse; it manages the private keys that let someone access and move them. Self-custody gives you control but makes you responsible for keys and backups. A custodian handles key management but adds risks tied to that provider. Neither choice is universally safest.

What a crypto wallet actually stores

Cryptocurrency wallets manage the private keys, or passcodes, used to authorize transactions; the assets themselves are recorded on a blockchain. A public key or receiving address can be shared to receive assets, but it does not authorize spending. Someone who obtains the private key can potentially move the associated assets, while losing the key may permanently cut off access. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance explains these basics in its December 12, 2025 retail investor bulletin, which is staff education rather than a Commission rule or legal opinion.

Choose who controls the keys

Option What it means Main trade-off
Self-custody hot wallet You control the keys using an internet-connected wallet. Convenient for transactions, but connected devices and accounts face online threats. You must secure the wallet and recovery information.
Self-custody cold wallet You control the keys using a wallet kept offline, often a physical device. Generally less exposed to online threats, but the device or other offline media can be lost, stolen, or damaged; access and recovery may be less convenient.
Third-party custody An exchange or other provider manages access to the keys for you. Can be simpler, but adds provider, operational, and insolvency risks. Fees, asset use, insurance scope, and failure arrangements require scrutiny.

“Cold” describes internet connectivity, not immunity from theft, loss, physical damage, mistakes, or provider failure. A hardware cryptocurrency wallet is one way to keep keys offline; buying a device does not remove the need to protect its recovery phrase or use it carefully.

If you use self-custody, protect both access and recovery

A seed or recovery phrase can restore a wallet if its device or key is lost or damaged. Treat it as highly sensitive: anyone who gets it may be able to access the wallet. The SEC advises: “Store your seed phrase in a secure place and do not share it with anyone.” Do not send it to someone claiming to be support, enter it in response to an unsolicited message, or disclose it to another person.

  • Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Keep recovery information secure and recoverable if the device is lost or damaged. There is no universally safe location or material established by the cited guidance; choose an approach that limits unauthorized access and protects against loss or damage.
  • Keep private keys and recovery phrases separate from routine online communications. A backup is useful only if you can still access it when needed and others cannot.
  • For general device backups, CISA recommends keeping external drives in a safe place when they are not in use and avoiding leaving them connected except during an active backup. This is device-backup advice, not a recommendation to store a wallet seed phrase in cloud storage or on an ordinary connected drive. See CISA’s device data protection guidance.

If you keep crypto with an exchange or other custodian

Using a custodian means relying on its security, operations, and ability to return or transfer assets. Before leaving assets with a provider, investigate its background and regulatory status, supported assets, security and physical safeguards, privacy practices, fees, and what happens if it shuts down or becomes insolvent. Ask whether it lends or commingles customer assets, and exactly what any insurance covers. Do not treat the word “insured” as proof that your crypto is protected like a bank deposit.

For the online account, use a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication, and stay alert for phishing attempts. The Federal Trade Commission’s cryptocurrency guidance warns that cryptocurrency is not government-insured like an FDIC-insured bank deposit; the government has no obligation to recover it if a storage provider fails or is hacked.

Verify before sending cryptocurrency

Transfers can be difficult or impossible to reverse. Before sending, carefully check the destination address and network against the recipient’s instructions. Do not rely on a familiar name or a message alone if the actual address or network does not match. The FTC says a cryptocurrency payment is typically not reversible, so an error or scam may leave no practical way to recover the funds.

How the U.S. guidance applies

The consumer and investor guidance cited here is U.S.-oriented. The SEC’s retail bulletin describes custody choices for retail investors; it does not require consumers to use a particular wallet. The SEC’s Crypto@SEC page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists an October 1, 2026 proposal concerning custody rules for investment advisers and regulated funds. That proposal concerns adviser and fund custody, not a consumer requirement to choose a specific storage method.
